Just got back from 8 days in the Dominican Republic. No internet, no TV and and no newspapers.
Figured that with the rest provided by the All Star Game layoff, by the time I got back the offense
would have shaken off it's blahs and come out firing. STUPID ME!!
After 50 plus years of mostly constant pain and disappointment, by 2004 I'd finally gotten the Phillies'
monkey off my back. Stopped watching/listening/following. What a relief! I was finally free.
Then came last year's gutsy late season rally combined with the total collapse of the Muts. That's
all it took to suck this stupid old bastard back in. They got off well this spring, even though their starting rotation
was a train wreck looking for some bad track.
The night they hung 20 on St Louis gave me a bad feeling. It's been pretty much a horror show ever since.
When I look at the balance sheet I see on the minus side: a really dumb manager; shitty ownership and FO; no team leader; very thin
starting rotation; no major league catcher; an offense that frequently turns opposing mediocrities in Cy Young; glaring defensive weaknesses;
repeated bone-headed base running; a repeated inability to manufacture runs; and 2 MVPs and a would-be MVP who might be better suited for a George Romero
movie. Oh yeah! And a farm system that's nothing short of embarrassing.
And on the plus side: Give me a minute here... OK! Hamels, Moyer, Lidge and decent, but over worked, middle relief. Oh, and they hit a lot of home runs.
In conclusion: Life is short and there is a lot of pain that's unavoidable. Pulling for this clown organization is avoidable. I've just
dialed the time capsule back to 2004. Fuck the Phillies! Let's go Eagles!!!
