  • (OT) Memorial Day

With the Memorial Day weekend upon us, may I respectfully urge everyone to take just a moment or two in quiet contemplation of the meaning and significance of this holiday.

We all owe a debt beyond reckoning to the men and women who, in Lincoln's timeless words, "gave the last full measure of devotion" to their country and comrades.

Wait....this holiday is about more than sales at almost every major retail chain?

    Just kidding.

That was just must sarcastic take on this Country's lack of business ethics.

But seriously I agree with Tino. People need to take a moment to appreciate our men and women serving overseas and here in the States. And it doesn't just need to be twice a year (Veterans Day/Memorial Day). Those soldiers in combat need our prayers 365 days a year. But since you have the day off on Monday because of the sacrifice they make every day, take a few moments and write a letter to a soldier thanking him for his or her service. (http://www.letterstosoldiers.org/ for more info). And I know times are tough right now, but if you have some cash to spare send a care packages.

As a vet, though only a peace time vet,I know how hard it is to be away from family and friends. Living in an area where no one speaks your language can add to the difficult times. I can't imagine all that plus bullets and grenades ,mines, injury and death to deal with as well. God bless.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

As a Vietnam vet, I salute the brave men who are serving today in Iraq and Afghanistan - often on multiple tours of duty within a combat zone.

God bless them and bring them all home safely.

They would probably arrest me for assault if I tried this.

Thought this might be appropriate for our May Holiday. As a Veitnam Vet I can attest to how horrible warfare is,,,, any warfare!
                  //////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Look carefully at the B-17 and note how shot up it is - one engine dead, tail, horizontal stabilizer and nose shot up. It was ready to fall out of the sky. Then realize that there is a German ME-109 fighter flying next to it. Now read the story below. I think you'll be surprised....

Charlie Brown was a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot with the 379th Bomber Group at Kimbolton , England . His B-17 was called 'Ye Old Pub' and was in a terrible state, having been hit by flak and fighters. The compass was damaged and they were flying deeper over enemy territory instead of heading home to Kimbolton.

After flying over an enemy airfield, a German pilot named Franz Steigler was ordered to take off and shoot down the B-17. When he got near the B-17, he could not believe his eyes. In his words, he 'had never seen a plane in such a bad state'. The tail and rear section was severely damaged, and the tail gunner wounded. The top gunner was all over the top of the fuselage. The nose was smashed and there were holes everywhere.

Despite having ammunition, Franz flew to the side of the B-17 and looked at Charlie Brown, the pilot. Brown was scared and struggling to control his damaged and blood-stained plane.

Aware that they had no idea where they were going, Franz waved at Charlie to turn 180 degrees. Franz escorted and guided the stricken plane to, and slightly over, the North Sea towards England . He then saluted Charlie Brown and turned away, back to Europe .

When Franz landed he told the CO that the plane had been shot down over the sea, and never told the truth to anybody. Charlie Brown and the remains of his crew told all at their briefing, but were ordered never to talk about it.

More than 40 years later, Charlie Brown wanted to find the Luftwaffe pilot who saved the crew. After years of research, Franz was found. He had never talked about the incident, not even at post-war reunions.

They met in the USA at a 379th Bomber Group reunion, together with 25 people who are alive now - all because Franz never fired his guns that day.

Research shows that Charlie Brown lived in Seattle and Franz Steigler had moved to Vancouver , BC after the war. When they finally met, they discovered they had lived less than 200 miles apart for the past 50 years!

THIS WAS BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN THERE WAS HONOR IN BEING A WARRIOR...THEY PROUDLY WORE UNIFORMS, AND THEY DIDN'T HIDE IN AMBUSH INSIDE A MOSQUE, OR BEHIND WOMEN AND CHILDREN, NOR DID THEY USE MENTALLY RETARDED WOMEN AS SUICIDE BOMBERS TO TARGET AND KILL INNOCENT CIVILIANS .

As an additional item of interest Franz Steigler died in Mar 2008 and Charlie Brown died in November the same year.

A somber day tomorrow as I remember my friends who were killed in Iraq.

And it's almost certain that I am headed back to Afghanistan or going on my first tour of Iraq after I graduate from the Army's School of Advanced Military Studies in May 2010.

Band of Brothers can be a tough show to watch sometimes, but it's a great show IMO........here's one of my very favorite scenes from the show, at the very end when they talk about what happened to the Soldiers after the war ended, and when they're told that the war's over.
"Philly fans are great....It's the only place where you pull up on the bus and you've got the grandfather, the grandmother, the kids and the grandkids - everybody flicking you off. At other stadiums, they give you the thumbs-down. Here, they give you the middle finger.”
