    Gaither Signed To Four-Year Deal

    June 16, 2006
    By SHANE EVANS

One down, seven to go. The Eagles announced Friday that they have signed their first draft pick, MIKE linebacker Omar Gaither to a four-year deal.

Drafted late in the 5th round with the 168th overall selection, Gaither was the seventh of eight players the Eagles picked in the 2006 NFL Draft. The 6-1, 235-pound Gaither was the starting SAM linebacker at Tennessee and a two-time all-SEC second team player.

Gaither will look to get in the mix with special teams this season and back-up Jeremiah Trotter and Mark Simoneau.

Last season, the Eagles had 11 selections and signed seventh-round draft pick, defensive tackle Keyonta Marshall first.

Due to the Hall of Fame game against the Raiders in Canton, Oh., the Eagles will have less time to sign their rookies before the preseason begins on August 6.

Eagles come to terms with two draft picks

    BY THE INQUIRER STAFF

The Eagles signed two of their 2006 draft choices yesterday, the first two of the group of eight to sign.

Omar Gaither, a linebacker who was the Birds' fifth-round choice out of Tennessee, signed a four-year deal, as did defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey, a sixth-rounder from Southern Cal.

No financial details of either contract were announced.

The 6-foot-1, 233-pound Gaither recorded 78 tackles, four sacks, four forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery last year. He was named to the all-Southeastern Conference second team for the second consecutive season.

Ramsey, 6-3 and 291 pounds, once was the roommate of Mike Patterson, the 2005 first-round pick, and replaced him as a starter last season.

Ramsey played all four seasons at USC as the team went 48-4 and captured two national championships. He made 40 tackles, including six for losses, last season.

Kudos to the Eagles for managing to sign a couple of guys who were in line for league-minimum contracts.

It sorta is a bigger (at least a tiny bit) deal than usual because the Eagles have a week less than the other teams do to sign their draftees.... it becomes a little bit harder to do without others contracts to weigh on.

Hey it's the off season, what the F more do you want.
