  • OT: Pittsburgh Cops use stun gun on fan during game

Is there any question that this would be front page news if it had happened in Philly? But in Pittsburgh it's barely even making the news! I don't know who this guy is but the cops had better put new batteries in their guns! They hit him with TWO stun guns and the guy doesn't even flinch! Hit him with the nightsticks a few times and he barely notices! Let's send this video to Andy and see if we can sign this guy when he gets out of jail! Watch the video...

Cops strike Scott Ashley with their clubs after he assaulted an usher and resisted arrest during a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game.

Pittsburgh cops have been caught on video clubbing and Tasering a drunk and unruly fan at a Pirates game in front of a horrified crowd.
Police said they feared for their lives after Scott Ashley, of Friendship, Pa., attacked an usher and then shook off a Taser shot and a flurry of billy club strikes when they tried to boot him from Saturday's game for being drunk.

In the video, an officer and a young usher escort Ashley from the stands while the crowd boos and defiantly chants "USA! USA!"
Moments later, Ashley nails the baby-faced usher with a forearm for trying to block a high-five from another fan.
The officer then fires the Taser, but it has little effect on the bald, burly fan.

Moments later, the bludgeoning begins, as two officers repeatedly club the enraged fan in the head, neck and legs.
Ashley tries to run, but the cops eventually wrestle him to the ground and cuff him as shocked fans look on.

The "USA!" chants resumed as police drag Ashley from the stadium.
A video of the incident was posted on YouTube and soon spread to other blogs.

City detective Francis Rende wrote in a criminal complaint that the two cops "feared for our safety" after Ashley refused to leave the stadium and incited the crowd to taunt the officers, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

"I then Tased (Ashley) but it had no effect on him," Rende wrote. "I then physically grabbed (him) to place him under arrest; (he) was a very muscular man and fought with both of us. I kept activating the Taser to no avail."

Rende also said angry fans were spitting and throwing drinks on him as he hauled Ashley away, the paper said.
A team spokesman said Ashley was drunk, bothering fans in his section and belligerently refused to leave.
At one point, Ashley asked the cops to step aside so he could see the game better, cops said.

"The PNC Park staff is well trained to ensure the safety of our fans … and followed PNC Park procedures last night when dealing with a disruptive guest," Warecki told the paper.
Cops took Ashley to the hospital before booking him on charges of public drunkenness and resisting arrest.

I might be in the minority here, but I say, "eh." This video doesn't show what the guy was doing BEFORE this. It sure sounds like he deserved a good beating. So I kind of see both sides of it. It seems a little unnecessary, but on the other hand, he wasn't cooperating, the tasers weren't working on him, and they couldn't just shoot him obviously, so...sometimes you just get what you ask for.

The guy seemed to be cooperating up to the point where the rent-a-cop decided to exert his authority and prevent the guy from getting a high five from someone. At that point I feel like both the rent-a-cop and the Pittsburgh cop overreacted. The guy wasn't being aggressive he was walking to the exit. Even after he pushed the rent-a-cop I don't think that warranted using a taser. The cop claims he "feared for our safety" at that point - if that's the case he's in the wrong line of work!

I agree that it appears to be a little overreaction on the part of police. On the other hand, when police tell you to leave the premises, just leave.

He must have been really drunk to absorb those blows without flinching. Probably feeling them today though!

No doubt, if this happened in Philly, it's huge news for a week and a half..........

But seriously, I've got to think that the cops were probably called to eject him for being drunk and disorderly, that he wasn't listening to the ushers, etc.. I don't even really have a problem with the tasering - you saw the size of that guy, he obviously wasn't cooperating like he should have, and if it's a choice between a taser and a billy club, at least they went to the tasers first. Heck, from the look of it, I thought the guy tried to take the cop's billy club after he'd been tasered, and after he'd been hit.

I once worked as a bar back, and I saw four bouncers literally have to carry some jerk out the door. I don't think anybody "likes" the use of tasers on suspects, but I can't fault the Pittsburgh police too badly here.

Stuff like this NEVER happens in Pittsburgh. This must be a Philly tape.
