  • Eagles interested in MLB Nick Barnett

...Well, they are interested in Nick Barnett according to Nick Barnett anyway.

The Lions are pursuing free agent ILB Nick Barnett and trying to sign him to a contract.

The Lions have been linked to plenty of middle linebackers, a sign that they are fine with moving DeAndre Levy outside. They obviously know Barnett well, as he's tortured them in the division throughout his career. Barnett is also getting interest from the Chargers, Bucs and Eagles -- if you believe his Twitter page.

    7/29/11 Update...

The Eagles have no interest in free agent MLB Stephen Tulloch, a source tells CSN Philly's Reuben Frank.

Frank adds that the Eagles have minimal interest in free agent Nick Barnett. They are almost certainly in the market for linebacker help, but will likely add someone a tier down from these guys. The Eagles have plenty of confidence in Jamar Chaney as their long-term stud linebacker.

      7/30/11 Update...

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports free agent LB Nick Barnett is in Detroit on Saturday for a visit to the Lions' facility.

This deal might happen quickly. The Lions have been interested in Barnett since the lockout ended, and their pursuit looks to have piqued now that he's been cut and is an unrestricted free agent. His position in Detroit is unclear.
Updating a previous item, free agent LB Nick Barnett is visiting an unnamed team Saturday and will arrive in Detroit tonight.

Perhaps the unidentified club is the Chargers. The Lions will hope that Barnett doesn't stay in the city he's currently visiting, because they want to sign him and make him a starter. Barnett's Lions visit will occur on Sunday.

        7/31/11 Update...

According to Bills WR David Nelson's Twitter account, free agent ILB Nick Barnett was in Buffalo visiting the Bills on Saturday.

Previous reports indicated Barnett had a Saturday visit lined up, but the team was unidentified at the time. Nelson spilled the beans. Barnett isn't known to have agreed to a contract with the Bills, and if he wants to play for a contender he'll be in Detroit tonight before a Sunday physical with the Lions.

          7/31/11 Update...

Free agent ILB Nick Barnett is no longer scheduled to visit the Lions today.

We've seen rumors that Barnett decided to cancel his flight to Detroit that was scheduled for Saturday night, and has instead stayed in Buffalo. He appears close to a deal with the Bills and would be an immediate starter there.

            As expected...

Bills agreed to terms with ILB Nick Barnett on a three-year, $12 million contract.

The Bills won't be rolling with underwhelming vets Reggie Torbor and Andra Davis after all. Barnett has plenty of experience at inside linebacker in Green Bay, and he's set to replace Paul Posluszny in Buffalo. A highly productive defender with sideline-to-sideline range, Barnett averaged 109 tackles in his first seven seasons with the Packers. He's a major upgrade. The Redskins are expected to turn to Channing Crowder now that Barnett is off the market.
