While anyone with a brain realizes that NFL rosters are too small, these arguments about giving guys games off are really oversimplifications IMO. We want to see the best product every Sunday, and nobody wants to see the best players rested for a week. And that probably includes the over competitive players too!

Simple- keep 16 games, charge $5, $10, $15 and $10 for the pre-season games since the last game is only relevant for a handful of players. Have the players more accessable after these games. As a result, you'll probably increase your fan base, reduce the pain for your loyal STHs and some families that don't normally go to the stadium could have a fun afternoon.

That makes much too much sense to ever happen!

I do not find this to be in the owners mindset or pocket book.

These teams have massive amounts of fans already --- they do not want to attend pre season games.

And the owners --- being in business -- care about profit and revenue, reducing the prices will not solve this "desire" . The profitability of 18 games would/does way over shadow any miniscule increase a few more fans at reduced pre season games would.

The TV rights alone for those extra games would be worth millions more to them, then having an extra 20k people at reduced price pre season games would.

            This.

With the TV and other revenue, they could play NFL games in empty stadiums and still make money. And no owner in the NFL has ever said "no, we have enough money".
And Goodell wants to water down the playoffs more? Ridiculous. When I was a kid, football went from late August to the end of December, then the Super Bowl was in late January. Now the SB is near the end of February and 9-7 teams squeak into the playoffs.
Keep expanding (read: diluting) the playoffs and you'll be competing with the NBA for the "most teams in the postseason" award.

I agree it is all about money. The players get enough and they will sign off on 18 games. You could have an expanded practice squad that would include two or three veterans that still can play but are really edge players. practice squad players would be activated for one or two games each year when a player gets inactivated. You would have to have some kind of rule that would keep a coach from letting his four or five best guys off when you play a poor team. Hell teams that are in the POs give guys a rest in week 15 or 16 anyway. Coaches know they can't take any game lightly so maybe they wouldn't give all the stars off the same weekend
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
              Hope is not a strategy
