Report: Eagles block Texans’ request to interview Joe Douglas
    9 NEW, 9
No Douglas for you ... for now.
    By Brandon Lee Gowton@BrandonGowton Jan 6, 2018, 8:27pm EST

The Philadelphia Eagles have declined the Houston Texans’ request to interview Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas, according to a report from NFL reporter Albert Breer.

Houston’s interest in Douglas was first reported on Friday. The Texans are looking to hire a new general manager since current executive vice president of football operations Rick Smith is taking a leave.

It’s no surprise the Texans have interest in Douglas, who is considered one of the league’s top GM candidates.

It’s also no surprise to see the Eagles deny Houston’s request. Douglas is a key part of Philadelphia’s front office. He runs the team’s draft board and complements Howie Roseman well.

The Eagles can currently block the Texans from hiring Douglas because Philadelphia’s season isn’t over yet. The Eagles can continue to delay Houston’s opportunity to interview Douglas by winning in the playoffs.

Douglas is just one of several NFL executives the Texans have been connected to so far. Eagles fans should hope Philadelphia can retain Douglas.

Let Howie go and promote Douglas? Will I be shot for thinking such a thing?

Not by me. Howie is a great dealmaker though. I don't see why they can't figure out how to keep both. Make Howe President or something. There are plenty of titles in that FO.

Howie seems to like being front and center, Joe seems to like standing behind Howie and letting him have the spotlight. Fancy titles for both and a pay raise and maintain the status quo
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

I could see the Eagles wanting more than one year out of Douglas, and blocking for that reason.

It's also a weird opening -- what happens in a year when Rick Smith comes back? Out of a job? Is it just a stepping-stone type of opening, with one year to build a resume and then go somewhere else, or can it be permanent? His current Eagles spot may be just as good for building a resume, and doesn't carry the risk of being unemployed (at least in a high-level position) in a year, so maybe he asked the Eagles to play bad cop and block the request.
