  • Joe D is still a great guy

New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas has been doing his part to help a Chatham restaurant. AP

The big, bald guy with a beard walked into Chatham’s River Grille to pick up his to-go order.

He told the bartender, 29-year-old Ryan Holsten, that the order was under the name Joe. Holsten searched and couldn’t locate anything with that name.

“It might be under Douglas,” said the big, bald guy, who wore Jets gear.

Holsten didn’t make the connection — that this was the Jets’ general manager. Holsten ran the man’s credit card and watched him walk away. Then he looked down at the tip line — $100.

Shocked, Holsten yelled to Douglas before he could leave: “Thank you so much! I appreciate it!” Douglas waved casually and politely, and walked out to his car.

Holsten and his co-workers did a quick Internet search soon thereafter and confirmed this was indeed Douglas, who is working from home as he prepares for the NFL Draft later this month.

Each of the past three Sundays, Douglas got about the same order at River Grille — burgers and some kids meals. And each time, Douglas tipped Holsten $100.

Holsten’s girlfriend, 25-year-old Cara Daunno, posted the most recent receipt on Reddit — a $100 tip on a $101.90 order. That’s how word of Douglas’ kindness — during the economic hardships of the coronavirus pandemic — became public.

As for Douglas, it sounds like he wants zero credit. NJ Advance Media reached out to him for comment, through a Jets spokesman, and he has yet to return the message.

The pandemic has hit hard for restaurant and bar employees like Holsten, a full-time bartender who has worked at River Grille for about eight months.

“It’s been pretty tough, but people have been taking care of us,” he told NJ Advance Media on Monday evening, in a brief telephone interview between dinner orders.

Holsten remains in awe of Douglas’ $100 tips, which Holsten split with his delivery driver.

“I was amazed,” Holsten said. “Super nice guy.”

Each time, Holsten said, Douglas simply picked up his order and left the tip.

“He was pretty quiet,” Holsten said.

For Douglas’ most recent trip to River Grille, on Sunday evening, he did curbside pickup. Holsten came out to meet him and hand over the order.

“Thank you so much," Holsten told Douglas after getting another $100 tip.

Though Holsten feels fondly about Douglas, he doesn’t plan on changing NFL allegiances.

“I actually like the Seahawks a lot," Holsten said. “But it’s still cool having him come in.”
    "Hey Giants, who's your Daddy?"
