  • Dawkins' contract numbers

It is my understanding that Dawk's performance incentives effectively void the current contract after this season?

If memory serves, he had the typical big 6-7 year contract with heavy backloading for 2007 and 2008 had it gone through.

Does this mean it now makes more cap sense to re-sign him for a final 4-5 year contract, backload it again, give him a huge bonus that offsets the money he would have gotten in 2007 as part of that contract, and create a situation where everybody wins?

Especially since we should have some money that was earmarked for Bentley and then J. Walker if we were as interested as intimated during those media affairs.

Cap gurus, help me out here.

First off, I'm glad the guy is not going to allow it to become an issue. Thank God for that. We've got the Karma rolling this year, and an unhappy Dawk could be a burr under the saddle.

I think they'll do what they always do. They'll assign a value to him that they think is fair, and that's what they'll offer. It would be nice to get some numbers up, but I'm thinking they can give him a 3 year deal, with a nice roster/signing bonus without having to worry about it compromising our cap situation.

I think they would be better off to front load it, especially if they can make use of roster bonuses to keep the signing bonus prorate at a reasonable level.

Nice to see you here too, Arch.

I wouldn't give him more than 4 years; I think a 3-year deal is pretty optimal; give him a nice signing bonus and salary and if you have to tack on a 4th or 5th year I would make them heavly incentive based.

I'd let him play out the season and then depending on his performance, i'd offer him a 2 year deal. If he balks and wants a cap-strangling long term deal, i slap the frabchise tag on him for next season. No reason to pay big money to a guy who's best football is behind him. And i love the guy, but no reason to get stupid. Draft a FS in the next draft, let him sit and learn for a season, then let him step in.

You have to have exceptions to the rule. Dawkins is that. You have to have players that are loved by everyone, so we have something to be happy about if the season goes south. Keeping Dawkins is the most important signing since drafting DMac. IMHO.

This is one of those times where the community needs to step to the plate and promise him Millions in endorcements if he stays with a lesser contract.

I disagree...keeping Dawk around regardless of his production just because people love him and can rally around him if the season goes badly is not a smart way to run an organization IMO...

In fact, it would help ensure the season goes badly because if he is not productive teams will harp on him and that could lead to losses...

No, IMO, you keep Dawk around if he plays well on the field and for his leadership off it. The leadership is most effective when he is playing well and people respect him. A player cannot ride on past achievements for long at all...this is a "what have you done lately" league and if there is a better safety the organization would need to go in that direction IMO.

Now, based on what we know, the likelihood of Dawk losing his skills so quickly and not being the best option at his position is slim to none...but I just wanted to state IMO that there are no exceptions to the rule that you must perform well to stay; Dawk can only control that and thus I am glad he is focusing only on that. He knows if he does that well, they will keep him.

People will say Mahe et al. are examples of exceptions, but they are wrong IMO. Mahe performs his role well on this team and thus he stays.

                    Vote,
Keeping a productive Dawkins goes without saying (so I didn't say it).

I am talking about getting the deal done for more than what the team VALUES at the position or think of Dawkins as far as nickle diming his production value. Dawkins will be like anyone else that ever played in Philly, once his production is not good enough to play..........the fans will boo him off the field. Just ask Eskin and his firends.

Ok, it sounded like you were advocating keeping Dawk regardless of how he played...he has played less than the standard IMO for 2 out of the last 3 years...is he on the downside or were they just flukes or ?

The Eagles have already extended him once and will only do so again if he can get back on track IMO...I think he will, but if he wants to stay he probably will not get all the money he wants...

No point in rushing to sign Dawkins now, but we should know how productive he is by mid-season. Maybe that's when contract negotiations will begin to heat up...

Assuming Dawk's play indicates he can still perform at a high level for a couple of years, I'm a lot more optimistic that the FO will resign him, despite his age, after they resigned Runyan.
