  • (OT) Stanley Cup Finals

I only caught the 3rd period, but that was an exciting game. Both teams' speed was amazing. I just kept thinking how the Flyers couldn't stay on the ice with either team.

    Fun game.

I didn't get to watch the game but I'm glad to see Brind' Amour finally get a ring. Plus I am glad to see some of the other former-Flyers like Recchi & Williams having success as well. The Flyers looked like they had so much promise last Fall and again we had so mush disappointment this Spring. Man I wish they would get it together and bring us another cup. 30+ years is too long between cups.

My brother spent some time at the US OPEN last week with the VP of NBC Sports who is an old fraternity brother of his. He had some funny stories (Chris Berman eating like an asolute pig by himself and stuffing 10 pieces of pie down his fat throat and not talking to anyone) but the most comical to me was that someone asked his friend if they were rooting for the 7th game of the SC Finals. His response "We want this thing over with as fast as humanly possible. A sweep wouldn't have been soon enough. It's killing us."

Fun game? Maybe. In serious trouble? Most definitely.

If the NHL can find a way to translate the excitement of watching the game in the arena to watching it at home it will go a long way towards improving it's ratings. The other "problem" that I see is that many fans don't relate to the players as quickly as with other sports. With the vast majority of players being Eastern Europeans and French Canadians and the fact that the game is not one that most children play (although I grew up playing a lot of street hockey I'm not sure many kids today are playing it all that much) I think added to the difficulty many people have in following the puck on TV and it's a cumulative effect of people not relating to the game.

IMO the NHL could make major strides in helping themselves by setting up extremely low cost hockey camps and hockey leagues to get kids playing it from an early age. Make the rules for kids leagues simple to understand and stress that the game is safe for kids so that parents are comfortable with their kids playing. Another positive step would be to get some of the players out there to meet the kids and teach some basic skills so that the kids identify with the local players and feel a connection with them. Once the kids start to get excited about the game, their parents will too and soon they will see an increase in their fans which will translate into increased ratings. The NHL has a great opportunity here to use the fact that kids are not being as physically active today as in years past. They can set up the leagues as a "public service" to help encourage kids to play sports instead of video games. They can promote it as way of reducing obesity in kids, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and never let anyone in on the fact that it's really all about learning from baseball's "little league" example to help promote their own sport.

IMO if the NHL would take those two steps of setting up the "little leagues" and having their players participate to allow kids to identify with their players I think that they will find their future is much brighter than it appears today.

you are making it too involved. the problem as i see it is that only a few cities in the US easily relate to hockey. it is a northern climate sport and national broadcasters need a national audience to be successful broadcasting. how many people in florida can play hockey, for instance?

You're partly right and partly wrong. Street hockey is a viable solution that works in any city or small town without an NHL team. I grew up in Philly and there aren't any frozen ponds here where people play hockey in the winter, yet Philadelphia is one of the stronger fan bases in the league. So the idea that it has to be a "northern climate" is wrong. Indoor ice rinks let kids in any state (including Florida!) play the regular game of ice hockey. Where we agree is that the current audience doesn't relate to the game. (You think it's because of climate, I think it's because of a lack of a connection to the game itself) If the NHL started leagues and made them free to anyone who wanted to play, in a very short period of time they'd find they had created a much stronger fan base. The point here is to get kids to relate to the players and the game and become fans that will follow the game for years to come. Little league did wonders for baseball. Pop Warner did it for football. At some point the NHL will wake up and make a concerted effort to create a game for kids that will get them excited about hockey and hockey players. If they focus on the kids the parents will become involved too. Look at how that marketing strategy has worked for little companies like Disney, Warner Brothers and the Muppets.

Hockey is a niche sport, it will never have a big enough audience to be a major sport. It gets worse ratings than WNBA games. As great a sport as it is, the ratings will never be there. NBC would have gotten much higher ratings w/ some cheapo reality show or My Name Is Earl rerun.

Was that a shot at My Name Is Earl? I couldn't tell.

                      That's a great show.

Not at all. Just saying that the NHL's ratings are MICROSCOPIC.

And those who love the sport think it's the best thing ever, but in my mind, and the mind of most of America, it's way behind MLB, NFL, NBA, NCAA football and basketball, PGA Tour golf. It's just the way it is. To me it's not all that interesting. And i DO understand the sport. Completely. So i'm not some know-nothing bashing hockey.

                            Agree.

Same reason that Soccer will never be a big sport in the usa.

                            Hockey is soccer on ice.

Great game-- but does not translate well to most of America.

Again I think that playing the game as a kid will equate to a larger audience later. I can't stand soccer but I think there will be a big increase in soccer's popularity in the coming years as the kids who love to play the game begin to grow up and relate to the pro teams.
