  • Latest chapter of "The Shawn Andrews Story"

The Big Kid, who has started and played very effectively at LT the past 2 games in place of injured regular David Diehl, has now missed his 3rd straight day of practice and is listed as 'Questionable" for Sunday's game.

Some interesting points related to this development:
-The Gnats are growing very thin on the Oline, which has Gnat fans bemoaning the unfairness of their injury plague and moving injuries to the top of the 'Excuse List', if needed.
    - As possible indications that Andrews' emotional status may also be tanking again, it's reported that the usually talkative Big Kid has not been made available to the press and the 'tweets' in his Twitter account have dropped the past few days from an average of 50 a day to zero!
    -
The always genial (not) Colonel Tom reportedly got rather testy during a routine presser on Thursday when asked if Andrews current back problem comes as a surprise given his history with the Eagles.
    - Linemates Rich Seubert and Kereem McKenzie continue talk optimistically about Andrews' starting Sunday night based on how badly he wanted to play against the Eagles. Do they have objective inside information or are the being unrealistically hopeful based on both the dire needs on the Oline and their own willingness to play thru pain in a big game. (We might also speculate on how much woofing the talkitive Big BId has been doing in anticipation of this game.)
    - In today's presser, Coughlin claimed Andrews was 'a little better' and had come out at the beginning of practice and was 'just standing around until they sent him back inside'. (whatever the F that means.)
    - (Subsequently in the presser)Q: Would you feel comfortable playing Shawn Andrews after he's missed a full week of practice?
Coughlin: I don't know that I will be. The medical people are going to have to make a very serious call on that one, too. If the decision is that he can play, we'll have to decide then if we do want to have him available or do we want to put him right on the field. All of those things will probably be in the next few hours.

    - Roughly half of the questions in the presser were Andrews related...sound familiar?

Assuming the Gnats medical staff OK Andrews to play, I like BP's predicted scenario: * Andrews - feeling the pressure to not let his teammates down will dress for the game and come out to play. About 5 plays in he will leave the game and he will not return.

Good. I didn't think it would happen, but I would've been seriously pissed if this guy had gone to the Giants and THEN decided to get his head screwed on straight, becoming the pro-bowl talent that he has inside of him. Let him get his head screwed on straight when he's 35 and out of football. haha.

An update this afternoon from Mike Garafalo on NJ.com gives a somewhat more positive picture of Andrew's progress:

        LINK:http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2...excited_b.html

Andrews did speak to reporters this afternoon as well:

“I don’t want to really give any percentages on where I am physically,” Andrews said, “but I will say I’m excited about where I am right now.”
Andrews also calmed any fears he had suffered a significant setback following a pair of back surgeries by saying he doesn’t believe there are any “structural” issues.

I too will be really pissed if he again becomes the road grader he was for the Birds when he was healthy. But what really angers me is the way he has dissed the Eagles, repeatedly suggesting he was treated poorly and gushing with love for the Giant 'family', how different they are than the Eagles, and how well he's been treated since he arrived in NY. What horseshit! He could very easily express his appreciation to the Gnats without pissing all over the Birds. AR especially went the extra mile with Shawn time after time. Signed both his brother and Peters to give him support. Paid him millions while he 'got his Phelps on'.

When I get angry with him, I try to remind myself (the retired psychologist) what a head case Andrews is. But I'm not a psychologist anymore...just a frustrated Eagles fan and Andrews' lack of gratitude really burns me up. Fuck him!

You forgot to add ...he will not return along with Eli who got killed on the 5th play by Trent Cole as Andrews writhed in pain and watched helplessly.

I think the pressure of facing his former team is what is causing his recurrence of back spasms.

                Knucklehead.

                    Dear Shawn,

There is an alternative...and you'd never have to worry about facing the Eagles. Ever again!

I hope he plays, and gets trucked. I would have a little bit easier time feeling sorry for someone who blew his back out playing football if he wasn't such a freakin schmuck.

One thing I agree with is the complete disdain that I feel for Andrews for dissing the Eagles when the Eagles went out of their way to try and get him back on the field. They were more than patient, and more than generous with him. He may not like it that the fans got on his a$$ because he was a douche, but he should be thanking ReidCo for doing what they did for him.

Who gives a F. Go back to ark or ala or wherever it was he came from. Why should I feel bad for him? Blew out back? Depression? Lots of people go through both without making millions. AND he had access to some of the finest training and support facilities available---from his employer. Fricking giant, I hope he gets spanked tonight or just goes away.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy

Isn't this pretty much a no-brainer, regardless of how we feel about the guy? No team is going to give a guy $6.5M if he's not even a starting player.

                          Keep Or Cut? Shawn Andrews

It is virtually impossible to try and construct a 53-man roster for the New York Giants right now. With the NFL Lockout we have no idea what the salary cap will look like, or if there will be one. We have no idea who will come -- or go -- via free agency. We don't even know for sure if rosters will have 53 players or some other, higher number.

We pretty much don't know anything. Except that we are bored and we need things to talk about. So, let's do a little 'keep or cut?' series. Regardless of the extenuating circumstances, I think there are certain players about whom it is obvious the Giants have decisions to make. Occasionally, over the next few weeks (meaning when the mood strikes me) I will toss out a player for discussion -- including what I see as the reason both for and against keeping the player as part of the 53-man roster.

First up on the chopping -- or non-chopping -- block, whichever the case may be, is mountainous offensive lineman Shawn Andrews.

Why the Giants should keep him

The 6-foot-4, 325-pound Andrews is just 28. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and remains an incredible talent despite the chronic back injuries that have limited his once-promising career. He played well in limited time last season. Good offensive lineman, especially ones who can play multiple positions well -- as Andrews can -- are not easy to find. You can't let guys like this go lightly.

Why the Giants should cut him

For all that talent, and the fact that he seems like a great guy who has worked hard to get back to the form he showed earlier in his career, he is a player who just can't be heavily relied upon. The chronic back issues he has were part of the reason the Philadelphia Eagles let him go, and caused him to miss most of two NFL seasons. He showed with the Giants last season that his back may never be able to handle regular NFL snaps.

Andrews' contract is a huge part of the reason the Giants should cut him. If they keep him the Giants would owe him a $3.5 million roster bonus on the 30th day of the upcoming league year, on top of a base salary of $3 million. That is $6.5 million for a player whose week-to-week availability is always uncertain.

                          Conclusion

In my opinion, the Giants have to part ways with Andrews. The depth he theoretically provides is nice, but paying $6.5 million for a backup offensive lineman who might or might not be able to stand up straight and play on Sunday is not a smart investment.

Vote in the poll and let us know how you feel.

If he were willing to come in as a back up and accepted a back up players pay, he'd be a great asset to have on the Eagles again. In a limited role he could be effective again and we all know our O-line needs help. It would allow Watkins to have a little more time to learn the RG position without quite so much pressure.

But Juk, this can never happen! The Eagles just don't provide the loving family atmosphere that Andrews found with the Giants. I think it must have been that first night that hooked him, when Colonel Tom took Shawn over to the Maras for a cook out.

After dinner, they all sat around the fire roasting marsh mellows and passing fatties stuffed with Hindu Kush from John Mara's private stock. It got to be really late, so Shawn was invited to stay over. Young Kate Mara volunteered to show Shawn, who was really wrecked, to his room. While tucking him in, she just couldn't resist taking a peek to see if what they said about black men was true. We can guess what happened next.

How can the Birds hope to compete with that?
