    'Why me?'
T.O. blames media for portraying him as selfish player

Terrell Owens acknowledged dishing out more criticism than he's willing to take.

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Terrell Owens blames the media for portraying him as a selfish player, although he admits a tendency of saying things about others that he wouldn't want said about himself.

In an interview with Bryant Gumbel airing Tuesday night on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, Owens acknowledges dishing out more criticism than he's willing to take.

"The only thing I can really think of is maybe it was the way I grew up, you know," he said, according to a transcript released Monday to The Associated Press. "I got picked on so much, and it's like I feel like I'm still constantly being picked on."

Owens said he doesn't think reporters are necessarily conspiring against him as much as using him "to gain viewers' attention." As a result, he believes that he is "misunderstood." He said other players have been, too, "but I feel like I have been one of the main guys who've been vilified."

    Why?

"That's the million-dollar question," he said. "Why me? ... At some point it does get to me. And I can't say it enough. Dude, I'm human and that's what I'm trying to get people to understand."

Owens also discussed his spat with quarterback Donovan McNabb that eventually led to his release by the Eagles.

As he wrote in a recently released book, Owens said he believes McNabb was jealous of the attention Owens was receiving in Philadelphia and that things boiled over when McNabb cursed at him in a huddle after a play. Owens said he took it as more than something said in the heat of competition.

"When I tried to address that after the game, he blew me off," Owens said. "So, that let me know it's more than just being competitive. It was more than that."

Owens is scheduled to report to his first training camp with Dallas Cowboys at the end of next week.

Well, it's hard to argue - the media most certainly portrays him as a selfish player.

Be careful Terrell! You're getting dangerously close to actually showing some insight into your paranoid beliefs. But not to worry...you will always be able to find someone who acts like a friend, but really wants to do you harm.

Now let's think... who on this Cowboy team that has been nice to you will get jealous when the Dallas fans start showering you with attention? Hmmmm...

          This guy is amazing----

First he is misquoted in his own book after telling everybody that the book is entirely "his words to us".

Now all this vilification is merely and only the medias witches brew.

((Glad he straightened it out, I'm sure the 2 franchises and 2 QB's he destroyed appreciate the insight))

            I love the childhood rationale.

Dude, get some therapy if you are still stuck in your childhood.

I am sick of Terrell Ownes and the media's obsession with this guy. Can we please have a moratorium of this guy until we at least play the guy during the season. He is not an Eagle! I am just tired of him and the media unbelievable obsession with this guy. Didn't the Heat just win the NBA Finals? Talk about Shaq , Wade or even Pat Riley. Football wise talk about the SB champs. You have Big Ben doing something stupid. Lets continually drive that into the ground. Or stick a mike in front of Joey Porter. You are sure to get something foolish from his mouth. A-Rod is a lightning rod in baseball talk about him or Schilling or Ozzie Guillen but no more TO!
              I miss Philly!

Unfortunately I'm afraid you won't get your wish.

Football is king--- football is now almost a year round endeavor-- football is upcoming for the next 7 months--- TO, the name sells papers, and gets a rise out of people ... the media will not pass it up, IMO.

I agree with MD that what's-his-name isn't going away for all the reasons he said. It sucks, but it's true.

That said, I am interested in tonight's interview. I think Gumbel will do a good job confronting him with his bullshit.

Exactly Fresh ! Why would anyone in Orlando care about that WR in Dallas? Aren't the Dolphins, Jaguars, and Bucs in that state?

Selling newspapers is great. What isn't is the constant barrage of stories about one guy who has enormous talent but in all honesty has not won a single thing. For once I actually agreed with Ray Lewis who said last year that the media needs to stop fawning over TO. perhaps if the media would get TRUE journalists instead of talking heads and hacks (see Smith, Stephen A. or Bayless, Skip) perhaps we can stories about teams. The NFL in the best in the promoting the TEAM and yet the media does its best to promote the individual.

I think the use of the word "victim" is a misqoute by the voice in his head. He didn't say that.

TO is a twit. I'm over my anger to the point where all of his talk is white noise. I don't believe anything he says and simply don't care about what he has to say anymore. I'll worry about what he might do to our secondary, but he is Dallas' problem now. I hope the Eagles are of the same mindset and just let him slide.

Book sales must not be doing very well.
