Big news on the Eagles’ defensive coordinator front!

CSNPhilly.com is ruling out Mike Trgovac.

OK, maybe it’s not big news, but during this endless wait for the Eagles to name a defensive coordinator, we took a moment to think this through, and logic says that based on everything they’ve done so far, the Eagles are not going to hire a defensive line coach to run the defense.

Everything points to them hiring a linebacker or secondary coach.

Why did the Eagles fire Sean McDermott? Because of pass defense. Because of those franchise-record 31 touchdown passes and three more in the playoff loss to the Packers.

And what have they done since firing McDermott? Hired one of the most highly regarded defensive line coaches in the game in Jim Washburn and fired linebackers coach Bill Shuey.

So add it up. Andy Reid decided he needed to completely overhaul his defensive coaching staff, and he’s already addressed the defensive line by bringing in Washburn, an old-school technician with no desire to become a coordinator.

It’s difficult to imagine the Eagles would follow up the hiring of a defensive line coach with the hiring of ... another defensive line coach.

Trgovac, a line coach here in Philly under Ray Rhodes and the Packers’ line coach the last two years, made perfect sense as a top candidate until Washburn came aboard.

But because coordinators spend a good portion of their time working with their position of trade, it wouldn’t make sense to hire a line specialist when you already have one while leaving the secondary and linebacker spots – which need the most work – manned only by position coaches. And new ones, at that.

Think about the people the Eagles have been known to be at least somewhat interested in so far.

The one person they’re known to have interviewed is Dennis Allen, who was the Saints’ secondary coach.

Before that, they contacted Jim Mora Jr., who came up as a secondary coach with the Chargers, Saints and 49ers before getting his first coordinator job with the 49ers in 1999.

Even Dick Jauron, who apparently was never much of a serious candidate, has a background as a secondary coach.

So that’s where the focus is. A secondary coach or possibly a linebackers coach. The Eagles have one of each currently on the coaching roster – former Eagles Mike Caldwell and Mike Zordich – but even if they are retained, they’re young coaches just starting out in the NFL.

With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top candidates that might be on the Eagles’ radar 11 days after McDermott’s dismissal and 11 days before the Super Bowl, after which guys currently on the Steelers and Packers staffs will finally become available for interviews.

    Todd Bowles

You may remember Bowles as the hard-hitting safety at Temple in the mid-1980s. He went on to an eight-year NFL career with the Redskins and 49ers, and after retiring he went to work on the player personnel side with the Packers. He coached at a couple colleges before serving as secondary coach with the Jets (2000), Browns (2001-04), Cowboys (2005-07) and Dolphins (2008-10).

Eagles connection: Bowles worked for the Packers under Mike Holmgren in 1995 and 1996 while Reid was on Holmgren’s staff.

    Tim Hauck
Need somebody to teach a defense to be physical? We’ve got the guy. Hauck just finished his second year coaching defensive backs with the Titans, where he shared a meeting room with Washburn. After retiring following a 13-year NFL career, Hauck coached for four years at his alma mater, Montana.

Eagles connection: Hauck spent the 1999 through 2001 seasons with the Eagles and became one of the most popular defensive players of the past decade because of his huge hits and reckless disregard for his body.

    Ray Horton

Horton is in his seventh year with the Super Bowl-bound Steelers and his fourth year as secondary coach. He played in two Super Bowls during his 10-year NFL career and is about to coach in his third.

Eagles connection: Horton was secondary coach to head coach and current Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg’s Detroit Lions staff in 2002.

    Winston Moss

The Packers’ linebacker coach was the only defensive coach retained by Mike McCarthy after the 2008 season, and he now carries the assistant head coach tag as well as coaching linebackers for McCarthy. Moss played 11 NFL seasons with the Buccaneers, Raiders and Seahawks and coached with the Seahawks and Saints before heading to Green Bay in 2006.

Eagles connection: Moss played with the legendary Jerome Brown at Miami and the slightly less legendary Ron Heller in Tampa.

    Darren Perry

One-time Penn State defensive back is finishing his second year as the Packers’ defensive backs coach after coaching with the Bengals, Raiders and Steelers following an outstanding 10-year playing career.

Eagles connection: In 2007 and 2008, Perry was Nnamdi Asomugha’s position coach with the Raiders, and we all know Nnamdi is about to sign with the Eagles any minute now, CBA or not!

    Dennis Thurman

Thurman, who spent most of his nine-year NFL career with the Cowboys, is a long-time Rex Ryan associate, having coached with Ryan with the Ravens before accompanying him to New York when the Jets made Ryan their head coach. Thurman is currently Ryan’s defensive backs coach. With both the Ravens and Jets, he led secondaries that were perenially ranked among the best in the NFL.

Eagles connection: Last time the Eagles brought in a defensive coordinator who was a former USC safety it worked pretty well – that was Jeff Fisher 22 years ago. Thurman and Fisher were teammates for one year at USC and just like Fisher coached under Buddy Ryan, Thurman has coached for years under Rex Ryan.

I hate everything the Cowboys stand for. If you think they are America's team, then you support everything that is wrong with America. The excess, the greed, the lack of maturity, the lack of responsibility, the lack of control. - Luzinski's Gut

I would LOVE either Moss or Thurman. But whoever it is our D should look a lot different the next time an NFL season is played.

You can rule out Thurman because the Jets wouldn't give him permission to talk to Oakland. Let's face it, we don't know much about any of these guys. The Missle would be cool to have around though. This from the Redzone:

Jets deny Oakland permission to interview Dennis Thurman Jan

Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star Ledger reports the Raiders requested permission to interview Jets secondary coach Dennis Thurman for their defensive coordinator job, but the Jets denied permission, a person with knowledge of the discussions said. That person requested anonymity because Oakland hasn't made public its search. The news was first reported by FOX Sports' Jay Glazer.

Thurman and new Raiders coach Hue Jackson coached together on the USC staff in the late 90s.

I wouldn't necessarily assume because they denied permission to the Raiders they would to the Eagles. Usually teams won't deny permission to a coordinator for a HC interview.

Or maybe the Jets owner thinks he can screw anybody just because his name is Woody Johnson. Which I kind of have to agree with.
