  • Source: Eagles definitely intend to Franchise Vick

Not really "new" news, but it does seem this is what's most likely to happen.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/s...r_espn_6073930

The Philadelphia Eagles will make it official next month and place their franchise tag on quarterback Michael Vick, a league source has confirmed.
The move will prevent Vick from leaving Philadelphia this offseason and ensure he's tied to the Eagles for the 2011 season.

Vick was selected to start the Pro Bowl, his fourth trip to Hawaii in eight seasons. He set career highs in yards passing (3,01, touchdowns passing (21), touchdowns rushing (9), completion percentage (62.6) and passer rating (100.2). The Eagles (10-7) were 8-3 in games he started and finished.

What's just as significant about the move is that, by tagging Vick, the Eagles then will entertain offers for backup Kevin Kolb, who is sure to generate more interest this offseason than any other available quarterback once there is a new collective bargaing agreement.

Franchising Vick will give the Eagles contractual control of two quality quarterbacks, one of whom they will be able to shop. Kolb still is under contract for 2011 at the cap-friendly price of $1.4 million, making him an even more desirable commodity.

Multiple teams coveted Kolb last offseason. Kolb started the 2011 season as the Eagles' starting quarterback but was replaced by Vick after suffering a concussion in the season opener.

Kolb said after the season that he wants "to be starting somewhere" in 2011.

And who comes in if Vick gets hurt, as he invariably does? I guess you sign a vet, but arghh.

I'm sure that they did for a number 3 or 4 which is all he was worth.

Does that still qualify as coveting? LOL!

I also think there were teams that inquired, the hiccup was that the birds saw him as their starter last off season and wanted far too much. They will still be out in the cold if they think they will get 2 #1s for him.

The Eagles know they're not getting two firsts for Kolb.

As far as Vick goes the Franchise tag is worthless. Once the CBA expires so do the tags. Maybe someone can correct me but it seems kind of worthless. If there are no more tags in the new CBA(which is a good possibility)what good is using it now?

Kolb was a second round pick, plus he's got 3 years of (what should be) very good NFL coaching, so unless someone's offering a 1st-round pick or a very high 2nd round pick, he's off limits. Maybe AR's hoping that we can get a 1st and a 2nd, or a 1st and a 3rd, etc. It's just that, what with the QB situation around the league, his stock should still be pretty good, even though he hasn't lit it up. I don't think he'd get any first round pick offers though.

It's a very interesting question. As I understand it, once a tagged player signs the tender, it becomes just another NFL contract. Whether the CBA and its tag status goes out the window later wouldn't matter at that point. Once its done, it's a done deal.

Once it's signed it becomes fully guaranteed that moment - other contracts generally aren't guaranteed for that year until the first game of that season.

No surprise here, its what makes the most sense, since they can't sign him long term until there is a new CBA. I believe even if the CBA does not include a franchise tag, Vick resigns here.
Trading Kolb will happen, they have a backup QB in waiting in Kaftka. You don't draft guys in the 4th round to hold the clipboard. He learned for a year and now he will be ready to step in if anything happens to Vick. Kaftka was a very good college QB, he got no playing time except in the preseason last year (and he played OK in the preseason). The Eagles will draft another QB this year to be 3rd string.

I was surprised by the mention of Kolb on the trading block. They are in a good position though. Kolb is cheap next year so they can take the stance to meet their price or keep him. They have that luxury. I would be very surprised then if they didn't sign a Vet QB to back-up Vick. They would need a competent back-up to step into the middle of a game should Vick get hurt. They don't want Kafka thrown to the Wolves like that. Then, if Vick was down for an extended time, you can make a long term switch to Kafka over the vet if they think Kafka is ready.

The tag makes absolute sense and I can almost guarantee that the tag or something similar remains and if they do away with it, the teams that had the tag will certainly be given an exclusive negotiating window rather than have their best players all of a sudden on the street. Remember that right now you have to have 6 years of service time to be a free agent. A new CBA would probably make that revert back to 4 years which puts a ton of talent on the street. The owners are not going to shoot themselves in the foot by letting the tag go along with this.

Steve, your boy, VY, is reportedly going to be released or traded, and he is certainly intriguing as a possible backup to Vick.

Ha! My boy VY (LOL!). I wouldn't mind seeing him as I've said before based on how well Marty Mo & AR have done with developing Vick and other QBs. And like I've said, think about how they mixed in Vick with McNabb and how Young could serve a similar role. My guess is that they'd go with a more conventional system type QB (in the Garcia mold) in this situation though.

Per the Philly papers via RotoWorld...

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that free agent Michael Vick will sign his franchise tender on Wednesday.

It's supposed to be the steppingstone toward a long-term deal, although if the Eagles don't trade Kevin Kolb, they may make Vick play out the season under the one-year tender. Any Kolb move would likely have to take place before the draft, which in turn would require a CBA to be finalized pre-April 28. As an "exclusive" franchise tagee, Vick would earn over $20M via the tender.

Interesting. I hadn't considered that signing Vick long-term would in a way HELP signing DeSean long term because it would free up $$$ under the cap.

The Eagles have had initial conversations with Michael Vick's representatives regarding a long-term deal, a source tells ProFootballTalk.com.

The assumption has been that the Eagles will wait until later in the season to truly get down to business with Vick. That way, they can see how Vick plays before unloading a truckload of money on him. However, with DeSean Jackson holding out, the Eagles can get further under the cap by doing a long-term deal with Vick. He's scheduled to count $16 million against the cap this season.
