On the hot seat: Winston Justice

    By Matt Williamson, Scouts Inc.
Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson looks at NFC East players who must improve in 2011.

2010 was a letdown for Winston Justice. After his impressive 2009 season, it looked as though the Eagles had found their right tackle. He has size and good feet. In 2009, Justice was very difficult to beat in protection.

    Justice

But last season, his game really fell off. Justice was Michael Vick's blindside protector. At right tackle, he often goes against lesser pass-rushers than those left tackles face. As often as the Eagles throw the football, they need a more reliable performer at right tackle as a pass protector. Justice also took too many penalties, and his run blocking was a major problem.

The right side of the line in general is a big problem for the Eagles. They could look to address it in free agency or in the draft with a possible first-round pick such as Wisconsin’s Gabe Carimi or USC’s Tyron Smith.

Justice might rebound to his 2009 form, but based on how he played last season, I see him as an ideal candidate for the team’s No. 3 offensive tackle -- not as a starter.

Scouts Inc. watches games, breaks down film and studies football from all angles for ESPN.com.

While it's a relief that Harris is playing well, it's a shame for Justice that he isn't healthy yet. Justice is a good guy. Good to have depth though.

    8/07/11 Update...

Eagles RT Winston Justice (knee) could be sidelined for up to another week.

With the recently signed Ryan Harris drawing raves for his play at right tackle so far, that could be too long for Justice if he's hoping to keep his starting job. Justice seems likely to miss at least the Eagles' first two preseason games.

He might end up on the PUP list. Then again, he might be starting against the Rams. I think he's a good man, and it's nice to have depth. He's a real athletic guy when healthy. Let's not rush him back.

He's also due $3 million+ this year and the Birds might end up cutting him to free up more $ to pay Vick and Djax.
