Redskins Coaches Want You To Know That They Stand With The Owners

Earlier this week we noted that the NFL coaches association filed a brief with the 8th circuit court in support of the players' effort to end the NFL's lockout. It seemed like a nice little show of solidarity between the coaches and players. However, the Washington Redskins coaches would like to make it very clear that they had nothing to do with it... In fact, the entire Redskins coaching staff hand signed a statement disavowing the brief filed by the coaches association and letting us all know that they stand with their awesome ownership.
"The Washington Redskins' coaching staff has not given its backing to the brief filed with the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of the National Football League Coaches Association. Our former representative, Kirk Olivadotti, is no longer with the organization and no member of our coaching staff was consulted prior to this action being taken.

"We stand united with our ownership and the brief does not reflect our thoughts on the matter. We, like everyone else, are hopeful that we can return to playing football. We look forward to a new CBA and welcoming back our players as soon as possible."
Anyone to care to bet that Dan Snyder forced them to sign this statement? He seems like the type of guy that might do that...

Redskins coaches stand with NFL owners

No individual coaches were named Wednesday when the NFL Coaches' Association filed a brief in support of the players in the 8th Circuit Court. But at least one group of coaches wants to make sure nobody thinks they're connected with it. In a statement released Thursday, the Washington Redskins' coaching staff distanced itself from the Wednesday brief and made it clear that it supports the position of the owners in their labor dispute against the players.
"The Washington Redskins' coaching staff has not given its backing to the brief filed with the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of the National Football League Coaches Association," the statement reads. "Our former representative, Kirk Olivadotti, is no longer with the organization and no member of our coaching staff was consulted prior to this action being taken.

"We stand united with our ownership and the brief does not reflect our thoughts on the matter. We, like everyone else, are hopeful that we can return to playing football. We look forward to a new CBA and welcoming back our players as soon as possible."
The statement is hand-signed by every member of the Redskins' coaching staff except head coach Mike Shanahan. A Redskins team spokesman told me the reason Shanahan didn't sign the document is because his title is Executive Vice President, and as such he represents team management (which I guess doesn't have to explain which side of the dispute it's on). Shanahan's son, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, did sign the document, as did defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and the rest of the staff.

The brief the NFLCA filed Wednesday specifically pointed out the damage it believes the lockout is doing to the staffs of the eight teams that have new head coaches this year and the "three additional coaches who have only spent one season with their teams." Shanahan and the Redskins' coaches fall into that latter category, but clearly, they don't want anybody to think they had anything to do with Wednesday's brief.

It'll be interesting to see if any other coaching staffs make a point of saying whether they do or don't support the NFLCA brief. Coaches have, after all, been caught in the middle of this whole thing.

Wonder if that was forced by Snyder one way or another. Seems like a move he'd pull. I'm sure the coaches just love being the only NL East team to have their pay docked.

I've got to believe that's it.....the players sure wouldn't appreciate it, so I can't imagine that the coaches would do that on their own.

If I'm not mistaken, this picture was taken BEFORE both the auto accident where his face went through the windshield, as well as the time his mother threw acid just before the senior prom in his face in an attempt to improve his appearance.

The son is also quite handsome and has a classic football physique.

His physical appearance alone almost guarantees that all players will fear and respect him!

OK, I guess this jokes not as funny anymore, but the Redskins still make me laugh for plenty of other reasons.

Andy Reid Does Not Support The NFLCA Filing Either

Last week, we reported that the NFL Coaches Association filed a brief in support of the players with the 8th circuit court. However, since then several teams have disavowed the NFLCA filing, the first being the Redskins. The latest is the Eagles. Andy Reid released this statement today.
"The Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff was not aware that a brief was being filed by the NFL Coaches Association in the 8th Circuit Court against the NFL Owners last week. We were surprised by the filing and do not support it in any way."
The Eagles are now at least the eight team to claim their coaches had no idea that the NFLCA was going to make this filing. Staffs of the Redskins, Saints, Rams, Texans, Jaguars, Cowboys and Chiefs have all issued similar statements. Jack Del Rio of the Jaguars said he wasn't asked or even notified about it.
"I checked with our guys and not one member of our coaching staff had knowledge of last week's brief filed by the Coaches' Association prior to the news breaking,'' coach Jack Del Rio said. "None were consulted or involved in any way. This action was taken without approval. Heck, it wasn't even mentioned to any of us.''
Amazingly, Del Rio was actually mentioned as one of the coaches negatively affected by the lockout in the brief.

Apparently, there's a reason that no one has ever heard of the NFLCA before last week. It is not a union, it is a trade association that basically represents assistant coaches. Not head coaches and seemingly not even coordinators. The only thing they seem to have is a name that sounds pretty important. In reality, that doesn't seem to be a case. In the face of the negative pushback from so many coaches on their brief, Larry Kennan, the director of the NFLCA, said last week that the brief "wasn't intended to be a statement from NFL coaches, but a way to present the negative impact the lockout has had on the league's coaches."

In the end, coaches are part of management. They're still getting paid by the owners and probably made for a bit of an embarrassing and uncomfortable situation when news broke that an organization claiming to represent them had come against their employers.
