  • Eskin says Eagles could consider Favre if they can trade Kolb

I could consider buying the Brooklyn bridge, too, but that doesn't mean I'll do it.

If nothing else, the QB controversy would be good for headlines

    Report: Eagles interested in Favre

    You knew it was coming.

The lockout's not even over, the Eagles haven't even traded Kevin Kolb yet, but a report has surfaced that the team is interested in Brett Favre as their backup for next season.

WIP's Howard Eskin, citing sources, went on NBC10 this evening and reported that it was "possible" the Eagles could sign the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

A team source told The Inquirer that bringing Favre to Philly was a "long shot" and that a "lot of things would need to fall into place" for it happen. For one, Favre may not even want to play football anymore, although he's held the NFL hostage before with his will-he-or-won't-he-retire act.
And if Favre even wants to un-retire, who says he wants to come back as a backup? The 41-year old has made it clear before that he never wanted to play second string.

But there are a few reasons to think Favre may be willing to accept an offer from the Eagles. He has a close bond with Eagles head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, having worked with both in Green Bay. And he may also want one last shot at winning a Super Bowl.

The Eagles will likely be in search of a starting-caliber quarterback as Michael Vick's backup if and when they trade Kolb. There are several candidates on the market, including Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck and St. Louis' Marc Bulger, but neither has the cache of Favre, even though he was banged up by the end of last season.

Eagles Interested In Brett Favre As A Backup? Commence Freakouts

WIP's Howard Eskin was doing an appearance on his other gig on NBC 10, and said that the idea of the Eagles pursing Brett Favre as a backup when Kevin Kolb is traded is "possible." The Inquirer ran it up the flagpole with team sources and actually didn't seem to get a flat out denial.
A team source told The Inquirer that bringing Favre to Philly was a "long shot" and that a "lot of things would need to fall into place" for it happen.
In reality, not that many things would need to fall into place. Kevin Kolb would have to be traded, which we all know is going to happen and may already basically be done. So there's one thing falling into place. With Kolb gone, the team would be in need of another QB and it's likely that a guy they could feel comfortable starting a few games would be preferable. It would be even better if he already knew the system...

What's that you say? Brett Favre has already played under Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg when they were in Green Bay? Well, we seem to have a fit. But Favre is retired and he would have to want to come out of retirement. Clearly, that's never been too much of an issue.

So Kevin Kolb would need to be traded and Favre would need to want to unretire. Doesn't seem like that many things need to fall into place...

Now, of course there's the issue of whether Favre would actually want to be a backup, which all he would find here. Would the lure of another Superbowl ring help with that? Did the sexting scandal finally sour him on being in the spotlight?

Who knows? But there's no doubt that the arrival of Favre would only amp up what is likely to be a circus of a year for the Eagles. They've already got Michael Vick and this explosive offense that's going to be national TV a bunch of times. They could also bring in Plaxico Burress, which would be sure to create headlines. There seems to be a good chance that the Eagles will spend big on at least one high profile free agent. Add Favre to that mix? ESPN just become the Eagles channel. Fox might as well get rid of Curt Menafee and hire Dave Spadaro, because it would be all Eagles all the time.

Also by the way, did anyone else catch the writeup of this "rumor" on PhiladelphiaEagles.com? The writer (Bo Wulf) actually says Favre is" perhaps best-known for his seminal appearance in There's Something About Mary."

Seriously? If he was slipping in a sly joke there, then good on him. I sure laughed. If he wasn't joking... he should start claiming he was.

Michael Vick Adds Fuel to the Brett Favre Fire

Last night, the rumors began to swirl that the Eagles have a small chance at bringing Brett Favre to Philadelphia to serve as a backup quarterback. Now, Michael Vick has added fuel to the fire by taking to Twitter. His most recent post reads:
I would be honored to have Brett Farve as a backup. That will be amazing Learning how to toy with defenses the way he did his whole career.
Now, as Jason mentioned in yesterday's post, a few things will need to fall into place before a transaction like this could happen. The biggest hurdle I see is convincing Favre to take the role of a backup after 19 straight years as a starter. Still, we all know how strong his itch to play football can be, so even that might not be an issue if few other teams show interest in signing him.

Regardless, with the announcement of our current quarterback's approval of the deal, the Favre-to-Philly fire just got more fuel.

That was my initial thought...However, someone who works for the team didn't rule it out which is odd.

That's not exactly news either... it's always *possible*. Particularly with the lunatic signing season coming up. There's nothing to indicate he's the Eagles first, second, third, or even fourth choice as a backup from what I can see, which would be the only way I'd consider it news.

Eskin and Farve. Now that's quite a pair. Who's more obnoxious?

Again, since these jackasses have nothing tangible to go on, they play the game of who once worked with someone else and put them together for a rumor (see Mikell rumors). It is just utterly pathetic. I understand that these guys need to write something but how about a real analysis of someone's game like we see on some sites? Or is the answer too obvious -- that they don't know how to?

Sources: Little chance Favre lands with Eagles
July 24, 2011|By Jeff McLane, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Before Eagles fans start taping over their No. 4 Kevin Kolb Eagles jerseys with the letters "F-A-V-R-E," they should know the report that the Birds could possibly sign the swashbuckling, serial-retiring quarterback appears to have little legs.

Despite the improbability that Brett Favre would come out of retirement to back up Michael Vick, the scenario caused quite a stir late Saturday night and into Sunday after Howard Eskin of WIP-AM reported on NBC10 that the Eagles were interested in the 41-year-old.

Where Favre goes, drama usually follows.

But there is little chance he will end up here, according to team and NFL sources. An Eagles source characterized the likelihood of the Favre circus coming to town as the longest of long shots. Another team source said that a "lot of things would need to fall into place" for it happen.

One potential obstacle was cleared when Vick tweeted the following Sunday morning: "I would be honored to have Brett Favre as a backup. That will be amazing learning how to toy with defenses the way he did his whole career."

The post was removed from Vick's Twitter account. Comcast SportsNet caught up with Vick later in the day and asked him about the tweet, but he said with a smile that someone else must have written that on his account.

Perhaps Vick simply realized that endorsing Favre to Philadelphia was imprudent. Kolb is still an Eagle, even though a likely trade to Arizona once the lockout is over and free agency opens has become one of the worst-kept secrets in the NFL.

The Eagles will need a backup, of course, if Kolb is dealt. And Favre would be as good an option as most of the candidates on the market. Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck and St. Louis' Marc Bulger are probably the best fits among the free-agent field, but both likely will want to start.

The same probably applies to Favre, who would have to deflate his ego considerably to take a backup role. He may not even want to play football again after last season in Minnesota, when his consecutive-games-started streak came to an end.

But Favre may want one more shot at winning a Super Bowl, and coming to the Eagles would give him a chance to do it with head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, two of his former assistant coaches in Green Bay.

Reid and Mornhinweg have talked glowingly of Favre.

There are many variables that would make it a difficult acquisition. Because of a lockout-shortened offseason and training camp, the Eagles will need to bring in a quarterback as soon as possible. Favre hasn't participated in a full camp in years.

And where Favre goes, distractions are sure to follow. It may even be too much for Reid, who has welcomed a distraction or two on the Eagles before.

Last night that arrogant prick Eskin addressed the "counter" reports that the Eagles have virtually zero chance of bringing in Favre by smiling that smug little grin and saying, "I stand by my report" ... as if he knows more than everyone else. I'll give him credit if they do bring in God (right after I finish puking!) but this is the kind of shit that Eskin loves. If they sign Favre Eskin's right, if they don't sign him no one can prove that they wouldn't have done so if they could work out the details. I really want to hear Andy say flat out that Favre was never a consideration and then listen to the wolfman try to spin it.

As much as I'd like to piss all over that moron, the fact is that Eskin practically stands next to Big Red on the sidelines during games. He does know stuff about the Eagles.
