Eagles Hall of Famer Pihos dies

Pete Pihos led the league in receiving his last three years.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Eagles Hall of Fame wide receiver Pete Pihos died early Tuesday morning at the age of 87 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Pihos passed away at 1:40 am this morning at Grace Healthcare in Winston-Salem, N.C., according to the Eagles.

Pihos was a member of the Eagles' 1948 and 1949 NFL Championship teams. He caught the winning touchdown in the '49 game, a 14-0 win over the Los Angeles Rams. In 1948 the Eagles topped the Chicago Cardinals, 7-0.

Pihos played in six Pro Bowls and led the NFL in receiving three times. He caught 373 receptions for 5,619 yards and 61 touchdowns. Pihos, born in Orlando on Oct. 22, 1923, was an All-American at Indiana. He was drafted in 1945 and spent two years of the military.

Pihos joined the Eagles in 1947 and played his entire career with the Eagles, also playing defensive end. He only missed one game in nine seasons.

He was inducted into Canton in 1970.

Pihos is survived by his ex-wife, Donna Pihos, his caretaker for 12 years, three daughters, a son, a stepson and eight grandchildren

"Philly fans are great....It's the only place where you pull up on the bus and you've got the grandfather, the grandmother, the kids and the grandkids - everybody flicking you off. At other stadiums, they give you the thumbs-down. Here, they give you the middle finger.”

Concrete Charlie and Steve Van Buren are still alive!

Bednarik, Van Buren and Pihos are three pillars of the 48, 49 and 60 Eagle championship teams. RIP to a great Eagle.
