  • 100 worst

I thought it was a decent read down. Any of the 100 worst that doesn't include Steve Jeltz or Adam Eaton is incomplete.

How about Pancho Herrera. Played with the Phils from '58 to '61. Had some power and a lifetime BA of .271, but struck out a ton.

He was a big hulking guy, and fairly nimble for his size but was a miserable fielder at 1st base. So the Phils, in their wisdom, tried to make him a 2nd baseman. Think Vince Wilfork pivoting on the Double play.

I don't recall him. I was 5 in the 61 season. Good visual, I got a laugh out of it.

Thinking back, I probably shouldn't nominate Pancho as one of the 100 worst. Actually, my younger brother and I (both Phillies nuts) loved the guy when he came up as a rookie in '58 'cause he had some pop in his bat.
The Phils had a decent lefty hitter named Ed Bouchee playing first, so they tried Pancho at 2nd.

As I said, he was pretty nimble for a big guy and my brother and I were really hoping he could cut it 'cause they sure could have used a big bat at 2nd. (Middle infielders rarely hit HRs in those days.) You had to feel a little sorry for the guy because he really tried but he looked really awkward trying to surround ground balls.

Despite his problems in the field, he was always smiling. He was from Cuba and didn't speak much English. He and Chico Fernandez, the SS, were the only Spanish guys on the team. Only lasted a few years.

Memories. The 50's and 60's were a good time to grow up. Life was slower paced and a lot less complicated.
