Philly's rank as sports town takes tumbleStaff and Wire Reports
Philadelphia isn't the sports town it used to be - like a year ago.
Last year, Boston was named America's best sports city by The Sporting News. And Philly was No. 2.
Now we're barely in the Top 10, at No. 9. And there are some who might argue that's a bit high, given the year that our local pro teams have had.
Chicago took over the top spot, thanks to the White Sox' World Series run and the return to the postseason by the Bears and the Bulls.
The magazine named the Windy City No. 1 in its 2006 annual ranking that's published in the edition that hit newsstands yesterday.
The Sporting News will honor Chicago during a pregame presentation on Aug. 9 when the White Sox play the New York Yankees.
"Chicago is a great sports town and a world-class city," Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said in a statement. "Not only are we home to nine professional franchises, and several semipro and college teams, we've successfully hosted large-scale, international [sporting] events."
Boston had earned The Sporting News designation as America's top sports city for the past 2 years. A winning season is the most important criterion in creating the ranking, according to the magazine.
The top 10, in order, are: Chicago; Miami; Dallas-Fort Worth; Detroit-Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti; New York; Denver-Boulder; Boston; Los Angeles; Philadelphia; and Phoenix-Tempe.
The St. Louis-based publication ranked St. Louis 29th.
