  • Baskett's performance

Love the kid, love what he's doing, love his confidence.

    2 things, though:

    1. Got pushed off his slant route a la Pinky and Thrash and nearly caused an INT for D-Mac. He obviously will experience growing pains, i know. But if that were to happen in a big spot in a divisional game the fans would be forming a lynch mob.

    2. His nice sideline catch. Great throw by Donovan, horrible ball awareness by the Browns CB, real nice catch. Anyone concerned that he didn't get ANY separation from the CB? He was step for step w/ big Hank. I know Hank's not a burner, but that was a little concerning to me.

    Or maybe i'm just overreacting.

You're overreacting at this point. His catch made ESPN Top 10 plays.

And a very nice throw from Garcia.

As JRJ would always say, one step on the DB IS open in the NFL.

Yeah but he didn't even have one step. The CB was side by side with him. Like i said, i could be overreacting. Maybe that Browns CB is insanely fast.

Oh, it was definitely McNabb's throw because that catch was on the very first drive of the game.

While I am well aware of the fact that I may be over reaching or being extremely premature, but I am starting to believe that Hank Basket should be the opening day #2 WR on the Eagles!

Yes, he had just two catches against the Browns, but proves my point rather than argues against it. he is getting minimal work in the preseason games, because he is being treated as a starter. while this may have come about due to injury, I think that Baskett is quickly pushing to take Pinkstons job, with Reggie Brown as the #1.

Now, it is clear from my signature line that I am a fan of Pinkston and want to see him as an Eagle WR, but this kid Baskett is very intriguing and is showing that he can do the job.

So, How is this for the WR depth chart on opening day.

          1. Reggie Brown
          2. Hank Baskett
          3. Todd Pinkston
          4. Gaffney/Avant
          5. Avant Gaffney
          6. Darrien McCants

With Lewis, Outllaw, Gasperson, etc being the odd men out. The lone caveat would be Bloom getting a roster spot as a KR/PR.

Here's my "Just World" theory on Hank Baskett:

The Bird's, desperately pursuing the elusive Gold Ring , go against their guiding philosphy of employing only character guys, and pursue the talented but destructive Owens. The Gods say, "Be careful what you wish for...you just might get it." Mysterious wheels turn and Owens is snatched from Baltimore and handed to Philly for peanuts. Bird fan are euphoric as we reassure one another that Owens has learned from a bad situation in 'Frisco and has grown up.

The season begins, he's an instant mega-success, and the Birds proceed to steam roll through the NFL. We dismiss the nagging little signs that Owens is still a childish ego-maniac because everything seems to be going better than could have been hoped. Then Owens goes down, but still the Birds find a way to get to the SB. We come within one pass completion of winning the whole thing and Owens is an almost mystical hero in defeat. Our disappointment is tempered by the certain knowledge that the Birds will be even stronger in 2005. Meanwhile, the Gods are smiling to one another, knowing that now the "payment" is due.

Owens reveals himself as the Devil and everything that could go wrong does. The "Season From Hell" ensues, crushing the spirits of fan and player alike. The non-Eagle nation takes smug delight in our pain and humiliatiion. Almost to a man, it is decreed by the "experts" that the Bird's window of oppurtunity has come crashing down and is nailed shut, largely due to the weakness of our receiving corps.

But the Gods are not without a sense of redemption. Recognizing that the Birds, and their fans, have more than paid the price for their hubris in signing and then exalting the Devil Child, the Gods play the next card in their hand.

The unheralded Hank Baskett goes almost unnoticed and then, undrafted. Minnesota signs him and then sends him to us for the enigma that is Billy Mac. The trade gets about as much attention as a drunk at the New Years Day Parade. But the Gods are again smiling to one another.

They know that they went abit too far in their 2005 mischeif and now have set things right by sending the Birds what Jaws described last night as, "possibly the biggest strory in the NFL this season".

"And a man of no distinction will be revealed unto you...and he shall lead you"

"So it is written ...So it shall be!"

Very entertaining post Tino. Let's hope this is true. But after T.O. blows up the Cowboys, lets hope the Gods are not so forgiving with them.

I just hope Hank doesn't continue to light it up through the preseason, only to disappear off the face of the Earth when it really counts.

He doesn't need blinding speed. He's got a big body, he's a big target, and he can use his size and body on a lot of those short, and middle distance routes. Art Monk wasn't blazing fast, but he sure did move the chains a bunch.

I still think we need someone in the package that can burn. I don't care if it's Pinkston, or if they get Lelie, but even if Baskett does light it up when the games count, I want that deep threat. Especially with the way the Eagles like to go 3-wide.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Coke Head himself wasn't all that fast and he ended up with a good career. Ask him and he'll tell you.

The eagles have played this right. They have helped spin this into a whirlwind of fascination on a league level. All of a sudden this Baskett kid will have to be accounted for by DC's. All the pressure is not on Brown anymore. I think it helps when they treat him like a coveted receiver by only playing him sparingly in these preseason games.

It also helps when the kid grabs everything thrown his way. DCs tend to notice that as well.

If he ends up starting, and playing well for the Birds during the regular season, Baskett will indeed become one of the feel good stories of the season for the national media.
