  • Sports Illustrated: Parcells Lays Down Law With Owens

    SI.com; Michael Silver

SI.com has learned that the previous afternoon, during the team's training-camp practice in Oxnard, Calif., Cowboys coach Bill Parcells approached trainer Jim Maurer and pointedly said, "Look, you tell Terrell that tomorrow I want him out here for practice. Tomorrow's the day. I don't care. Tomorrow's the day."
"Before T.O. got back out there, a lot of people were starting to second-guess Bill," one Cowboys player says. "For the first time ever, he'd shown a little weakness, like he might not be totally in control, and like he didn't know how to handle this situation. Because, let's face it, it's been a total spectacle so far."

Don't think that the "Tour de Terrell" stunt Owens pulled last week -- wearing the Discovery Channel pro cycling team's silver and blue jersey and a racing helmet while riding his stationary bike on the sideline during practice -- didn't irk Parcells, who reacted disgustedly. "As soon as he saw T.O. in the jersey, and saw all the TV cameras heading over, Parcells got up and walked to the other end of the field," says the same Cowboys player. "It's like he was saying, 'There's no way you're gonna get a shot of me in the same frame as that crap.'"
Despite having consistently complained of hamstring pain, the wideout was rumored to have run a 4.48 40-yard dash on Tuesday. An MRI exam on Aug. 5, three days after he said he first injured the hamstring, reportedly came up clear.
"We all just sat and wondered, 'Who's gonna win this battle?'" says the Cowboys player. "As a player, you can't help but get distracted when something like that is going on. The guy comes out last every single practice, has somebody carrying his helmet and is always putting on his uniform at the last minute, and then he's out there riding the bike and drawing attention to himself. Even if he's not trying to be a deterrent -- and he clearly is -- it's obvious that the coach isn't happy.

"The bottom line is, he appeared to be healthy and wasn't practicing. So we'd sit and wonder, Who's gonna win? How's it gonna go down?
Already has his teammates saying he's a distraction. Haha!

And how many of these experts said he will behave the first year? It isn't even the first game.

I still get irked at people who forget how he acted in his first season when the team only had one loss in about 12 games. Personally, I think AR was alot more lenient than Parcells will ever be, so TO's antics are going to push Bill into confronting TO. And we all know how TO responds to any criticism.

Wow. Just...wow. I can't believe they didn't even make it out of training camp without some sort of battle.

Pedro I'll admit that I thought TO would behave in his first year. But you're not being totally fair in comparing his first year here with his first in Dallas. In 2004 the Eagles supported him as he went to "court" in order to play here. He was fighting to play for the Eagles and essentially had 1 strike on him. It wasn't clear how much of his past problems he caused and how much of it was the situation in SF.

This year he is under a microscope after proving to the world that he's mentally unstable. Being kicked off a Super Bowl team just months after putting in an amazing performance in the SB takes some doing. His antics were so bizarre that one of the top 2-3 WR's in the game had alienated himself from almost every team in the league. Certainly it was reasonable to assume that he'd try to mend his damaged reputation. I think he had a lot more support from coaches, fans and players in 2004 than he will ever get again in his career. He screwed himself and in the process probably destroyed a large portion of his fan base. I'll never respect the guy again - no matter what he does on the field. I'm done with him.

It's interesting because when I heard last night he practiced yesterday, I just assumed he decided to practice on his own because he knew he had to get some practice in before the nationally televised Monday Night game.

I guess it was Parcells who initiated this, not Owens.

Frankly, I am shocked at some of these antics he is pulling already. I had figured that he would come to Cowboys's camp, work harder than any other player, and be the perfet teammate until things turn ugly at any time during the regular season.

The guy is really burning his bridges. If this continues, I don't think there is a coach in the NFL that will take on a guy that consistently puts himself above the rest of the team.

I actually feel sorry for Parcells. He has been forced into this situation by his egotistical owner.

Incredible. The guy hasn't learned a damned thing.

I wonder wat the guys in the Eagles locker room are saying about this ish. Probably laughing their damned heads off.

Parcells must be losing it. In the old days, he wouldn't have the trainer tell the player, he would do it himself. I don't think he was ever hesitant about getting in Keyshawn's face. With Owens, it appears as if he doesn't want to confront him directly.

Probably because he told JJ "He's your pet project. I've got nothing to do with him!"

Clearly, Jones went after him too fast and too hard. If Owens had to swing in the breeze for awhile with an uncertain future, he may have played it differently. But he thinks that he's got Jerry's total support and Bill by the balls.

People seem to be assuming it's because Parcells is afraid of him. It could be that Parcells is just so disgusted he doesn't even want to talk to him. Remember, it was stated in the offseason that Parcells wanted little to do with Owens.

I think Parcells is just so disgusted by Owens he'd rather not even talk to him (let alone have him on his team).
