  • Note to Andy....

    Andy,

Call the Bronco's now, make the trade.

You need some speed (for deep threat) at WR.

    Thanks for your attention.

Agreed. I cannot believe they will go into the season with NO legitimate healthy deep threat/speed guy at the WR position. This is such a glaring weakness on the team that it cannot be ignored. Please fix this Andy as I think this is at least as important to the success of the team this year as the "big back".

After this game, I feel more like Marty Johnson may be able to handle 3rd and short, and that we need Lelie or a receiver to stretch the field worse than the RB.

Yes, and this is not a slam on Baskett. Hank may be a good one. But, there are going to be games where he is going to be shut down completely. He is a rookie after all. And, he is going to need some help at times to get open.

If Hank has to face a pro-bowl caliber corner this year, he is going to have a rough time. This is true for most players. But, it is especially true for a rookie that has no real breakaway speed or is not yet a smooth route runner.

Lelie can bring something to this team. I feel it in my bones

Well, this is where you guys lost me. Lelie will not do any better than Baskett against McCallister. Get real guys. He shuts down everyone, except other probowl players. When you play a team with ONE shut down corner, you have to accept it and just go to the other weapons. Brown and Baskett and whoever else out there are going to have games where they are not even going to be looked at. However, I don't really know of too many of them in our division. Even so, how many teams have enough talented defenders to shut down Westy, LJ, and both WR's? Baltimore was about the ony one that I konw of.

We played without Westy and still scored onthe first two drives. That is what I got from this. Not, Baskett was shut down for 15 minutes by one of the top corners in the league.....since Lelie would have been too.

McCallister is the schnit, don't trip. ANY WR in this league would have a tough night against that kid.
I Don't think Lelie or Pinky would have made much difference last night. Westy would have.

Gotta agree that there will be games where someone (Baskett, Brown, Westbrook, LJ, etc) is shut down. It isn't like other teams are going to mail it in just because they play the birds. But someone has to step up. This is still preseason and by no means should this be a good gauge of the season but it should be a wake up that there are some issues. A couple of weeks ago Collinsworth threw out a dart or two about depth and many on the board took great exception. I tend to agree with him but I still have high hopes
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
                  Hope is not a strategy

How similar is Denver's offense to ours?

well, mcalister can only cover one guy. so it's better to have more legitimate targets. i'm all for adding lelie.

I think we're seeing why Baskett dropped out of the draft, his lack of speed is a big concern. I usually don't buy into 40 times w/ WRs, but if you're going to put Baskett into the Pinkston role where you have him running go-routes, he's going to fail. Even that nice catch he had against the Browns, he had an average CB running w/ him step for step.

But i'm not down on him, McCallister is a great player, he can neutralize the best WRs, that's not a slight against Hank.

How many McCallisters did they have In that secondary? He is only one guy right? And if we were only sending one guy out I could buy the shut down corner deal... but nobody got open deep, in fact nobody got open much.

I wasn't addressing Baskett individually or personally(IMO the jury is still out) as I was the lack of deep speed on this team in general. People here don't want to admit it, but Pinky adds a dimension to the O that D's have to account for. There is NO deep threat thus the D can play differently.

Here are a couple of alternatives to Lelie:

                            1) Justin McCareins. I know he's been a bust in NY BUT remember when the Eagles coveted him and considered signing him to a RFA offer sheet? Plus - he's averaged 16 yards per catch his career. He averaged 16.6 ypc last year in a bad offense. That average is better than everyone last year on the Birds aside from McCants' 17.4 avg on 5 catches. He's a deep threat who stretches the field and he's in the doghouse with new coach Eric Mangini in New York. He does stand to make $2.2MM this year though.

                            2) Charles Rogers - while I never thought the Lions would take the cap hit to cut him - it's possible. He's a "never was" but huge talent. If used as a deep ball threat only - it's about the easiest way to ease yourself into this or any other offense. Also - although he hasn't played much, he has been practicing in ex-coach Mariucci's WCO now for years. He also is set to make $750K this year - real cheap and we don't assume a hugh salary cap problem (the Lions would absorb it).

MD, who is Baltimore's 'speed guy'? It's not Derrick Mason. Or Clayton. And McNair seemed to find guys open all over the place in the first half.

I agree that w/ Brown and Baskett, you lack speed. Brown's speed, to me, is fine. Baskett's is not. He needs experience and guille to compensate, and he's too young to have that at this point.

But in the end, i agree that speed is needed, and i agree that they should bring in Lelie. Not often do you have a situation where you have a glaring need, and there JUST HAPPENS to be a player available for trade that fits the bill to a tee. They should jump on it. My thinking is that Denver is trying to create a bidding war and get some desperate team to offer a 2nd round pick perhaps.

But man, if they cough up a 2 for Lelie, it will make me even more bitter that they weren't able to land Javon Walker.
