    Richmond, Clarke Have Surgery

    August 18, 2006
    By DAVE SPADARO

Greg Richmond was excited because he was finally healthy and ready to make a strong run at the 53-man roster. Adrien Clarke was excited because he wanted to take last year's experience and catapult it into more during the 2006 campaign.
Both, however, underwent surgery this week and are headed to the Injured Reserve list for the entire season.

The Eagles Friday announced that Richmond and Clarke each underwent lower back surgery on Wednesday, August 16. Both surgeries took place at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson Hospital. Richmond's surgery was performed by Dr. Todd Albert, while Clarke's surgery was performed by Dr. Alex Vaccaro.

Clarke, a seventh-round draft pick in 2004 from Ohio State, started four games at left guard last year and was in line to compete for a more prominent role in the offense this year.

But Clarke suffered his back injury in the preseason game against Oakland and didn't play a snap more before having the surgery.

Richmond, who joined the team as a rookie free agent in 2004, spent that season on the practice squad and then looked to make a roster run last spring. But he suffered a herniated disc early in last year's training camp and underwent surgery, spending the season on Injured Reserve.

Both he and Clarke are in line for that fate this season.

Damn - I didn't know Clarke was that bad. That's a shame because I think he was the third best guard on the squad. Looks more and more like Honey Buns is a lock especially with the latest conversion to guard.

That stinks for both guys. The team may end up missing their contributions.

Who was that fictional Phillies prospect we made up over at Philaphans? Kevin Oudeis or something? I think Richmond is his real-life equivalent.
