  • Hurricane could postpone game Sunday

     Tweet (30) Share (14) Pin

As mentioned earlier, the looming threat of Hurricane Joaquin has caused the NFL to develop contingency plans in case Sunday's scheduled game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins cannot be played. One of those plans, according to Jason La Canfora, involves the Eagles and Redskins moving their bye week to now and rescheduling the game for Week 8, when both teams currently have a bye.

This option would not seem to be preferable for either side. Both teams have already begun preparing for their Week 4 game. Forcing them to have a bye now would essentially be robbing them of a true bye week since their preparations have already begun.

Keep in mind an official decision has not been made yet, and it remains to be seen if the storm will even force one. Until then, it will be interesting to see how the NFL handles this situation.

They would really be screwed if the lost their bye week. Horrible idea so I am certain Roger will go with it.

Well, the bye week would be now. Probably not a bad thing for all the guys coming off the injured list from last game. Though it could be needed more later in the season.

Agree. Let them go to a neutral site, away from the storm. Ravens-Steelers is on Thursday. Maybe let them play there at 4:30 Sun or have a doubleheader again for Sun night.

I take great comfort in knowing that, regardless of the nature or importance of the decision, if our Commissioner gets involved he can be counted on to weigh all aspects of the issue very, VERY carefully and then totally fuck it up.

The NFL has postponed or moved the site of games a number of times in the past due to weather issues, including a few times due to hurricanes/tropical storms. Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which forced the Dolphins and Patriots to have their "bye" week during the very first week of the season, is one example.

Because the Eagles and Redskins have their scheduled bye week the same week (Sunday 11/1), moving the game back to that date would not be hard. The big negative of moving the game from the Eagles' point of view, besides losing a true bye week, is that it would give the Eagles three straight road games in the middle of the season (at CAR, at WAS, at DAL).

Obviously team and fan safety has to be the first priority. Hopefully the game will be played this Sunday (and I'll be able to attend and make like Lieutenant Dan during the hurricane in Forrest Gump).

To be fair to Roger Goodell and the NFL in this case, atmospheric conditions are making predictions on the exact track of the storm very difficult right now. There's a strong cold front (and low pressure system) near the coast and a strong high pressure cell in the western Atlantic. That cold front interacting with the hurricane is what will bring significant rain to the Mid-Atlantic long before the hurricane's center of circulation actually arrives.

With the teams sharing a bye week, it would be stupid to move the game to a neutral site to be honest. It is possible they could move the game back to Monday night if the storm has cleared the Mid-Atlantic by that point and play the game at say 7 PM. The NFL has done that kind of thing a few times in the past, such as last year when a Jets/Bills game was moved time-wise from Sunday afternoon to Monday night due to a massive snowstorm south of Buffalo where Ralph Wilson Stadium is located.

They won't be moving the site. It's all about money. They most likely will just postpone the game and switch bye weeks. That's the easiest thing to do. They could also move the game to Monday or Tuesday night. Seeing as though everything will be a mess I just see switching dates the most sensible solution. Sucks.
