NFL projecting big jump in salary cap for 2017

The NFL informed teams at the league meetings Tuesday that the per-team salary cap for 2017 is projected to be between $166 million and $170 million, a person with knowledge of the presentation told Tom Pelissero of USA Today.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to disclose the numbers, which would represent another record high and another eight-figure jump from the $155.27 million cap this year. And the league's projections often have been a little low in the past.

The final cap is usually set just before free agency begins in March.

there's too much TV money, they can't be hurt too badly till that contract is up
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

Do you think that the TV money may actually go down? That would be a first.

It will if ratings continue to decline. But live sports is the only remnant of tv advertising that still can be counted on. NFL won't be hurt by the ratings until possibly the tv contract after the next one.

That's the way I see it too. If ratings are down it's most likely because of Thursday nights I imagine. Are they getting hit on Sundays too?

Thursday and Monday games need to become flex type of games, The powers that be have shown a shitty ability to pick games that are worth staying up to watch. I know that unless the Birds are on, I don't watch at all.

Not sure how to do it but I think timing sucks. Est coast the games don't end until midnight. But you can't start much earlier because of the west coast. Maybe have two games on Monday. An early and a late. Both coast can reasonably see the game and if a game sucks maybe a person could switch to the other. That would be fan friendly thought and the NFL is NOT fan friendly
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
              Hope is not a strategy

So the big question is how does TNF impact each team's revenue and therefore the salary cap? If all of us are right and the Thursday night games are leading to a watered down viewing experience, can the league afford to dump Thursday Night Football without damaging the salary cap?

Less income means a smaller cap right? Does anyone think the league would reduce the cap? That would be complete chaos as teams try to rewrite long term deals based on a higher cap or cut players to try to get within the lower space. Players and the Union will never go for that - it simply won't happen.

So how can they dump TNF without losing the revenue? Maybe they can replace it with an on-line streaming partner that would allow anyone to watch the games anywhere. They do allow some games to be seen through the NFL app but I'm sure they'd happily sell that right for the right price.

Unless they find a creative way to replace the TNF income I don't see them changing.

I don't see them changing it. Maybe they move it to Friday night? A lot of players like it because they get a long weekend off.
