Bills, Sean McDermott discuss coaching vacancy for second time

The Buffalo Bills will interview Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott for the second time in a week in their head-coaching search, John Wawrow of the Associated Press reports.

A person with direct knowledge of the discussions says the meeting will take place on Wednesday. The person spoke to The Associated Press late Tuesday night on condition of anonymity because the Bills have not announced the interview.

McDermott's initial meeting with the Bills happened last Wednesday. He was the first of four candidates to interview for the job to replace Rex Ryan, who was fired two weeks ago.

McDermott has 18 seasons of NFL coaching experience, including the past six overseeing Carolina's defense.

He'll fail but that's because Buffalo like Cleveland is a black hole. Plus, it's his first HC job and it's a dog with fleas.

For me it is as much who he has to follow. Ryan seems to have the same impact Chip had here and then he brought his brother in.

I hope McDermott does well but he's going to need a patient ownership and fan base and might not get it.

McD is one of those guys who I believe was a good coach who took the fall for a D not talented enough or not performing. Maybe he was too young or inexperienced but I believe he is a good coach. Not sure he is head coach material yet but I think he is a good D coordinator.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
          Hope is not a strategy

I think that he "over coached". Remember how he constantly ran LBs in and out of the game? I don't think there's such a thing as a two down LBer anymore. They pass so much that you can cover or you can't. I'll bet that he'll be a pretty good HC. He was set up to be Andy's successor years ago but it never happened. Good man.

With McDermott as D coordinator, we lost 21-16 to the Pack and they went on to score 48,21 (in the cold in Chicago), and 31 in their next three playoff games to win the Super Bowl. Considering the talent we had and what transpired with our D the next 2 seasons, giving up 21 to that team was pretty good.

Looking back, it sure would have been nice if Andy would have been a little more patient with McDermott instead of promoting Juan Castillo to D-Coordinator. I wonder what meds was Andy on at the time?

On another note, it looks like Frank Reich is staying put.

I think he is actually set up pretty nicely on offense. They run the ball better than anybody in the league. Taylor can play action pass. Now if he is given the time to build a defense then he may be able to succeed. But he will need to hit in the draft to do it.
