Eagles claim LB Steven Daniels off waivers

The Eagles claimed linebacker Steven Daniels off waivers from the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Daniels, 24, is 5-foot-11 and 245 pounds. He was Washington’s seventh-round pick last year and suffered a labrum injury last August. Daniels was waived by the Redskins on Tuesday.

The Eagles continue to seek depth at linebacker. They drafted converted safety Nathan Gerry in the fifth round last week, but they remain unproven at the position behind starters Jordan Hicks, Nigel Bradham, and Mychal Kendricks. Former backup middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch retired this offseason.

Given the Eagles current group of linebackers I think Daniels has a chance to stick. He is a hitter, put him and the kid the two special teams players they got in the draft together and I know its hard to believe but our special teams might be even better next year.
Were from Philly F in Philly no one likes us we DON'T CARE!

It just surprises me because Washington didn't have much on defense that I remember last year. I'm looking forward to seeing what G-Hill and Walker do too and of course the guy that we drafted too. Maybe it will just come down to salaries in the end? They picked him up on waivers so they picked up his contract to whatever that amounts to.

        FWIW:

        http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2...boston-college

The Eagles showed pre-draft interest in Daniels last offseason. The team brought him in for a pre-draft visit and put him through a private workout. Pro Football Focus listed Daniels as one of most underrated prospects in the 2016 draft class.

Despite being the anchor of a stout defense at Boston College, Daniels is one of the most underrated prospects in the 2016 NFL Draft. He was not only the best linebacker in the ACC, but he also received the highest grade among all college linebackers, which is largely due to his work in defending the run. His run stop percentage of 15.3% led all Power-5 inside linebackers and 50 of his 56 tackles in the running game were stops, which is a very impressive number. Although, he improved in pass coverage in the 2015 season and allowed only one touchdown in coverage; it is still to be seen whether he can be a three-down linebacker in the NFL, which will probably impact his draft position.
The addition of Daniels gives the Eagles more depth at linebacker. He’ll have a chance to compete for a roster spot this summer if he can stay healthy.

          Lawlor's Take:

          http://igglesblitz.com/2017/05/eagles-find-thumper/

Before you get too excited or accuse me of being nuts, this is a depth move. Before Daniels can change the game of football and go to the Hall of Fame with a handful of Super Bowl rings, he has to show he can get healthy and play at the NFL level. The Skins took a chance on him last year, but must have thought he wasn’t going to be healthy since they let him go so quickly.

At his best, Daniels is a very physical MLB. He will knock the crap out of blockers, runners, receivers and any other biological entities that come near him. I called him the most physical player in the 2016 draft.

Daniels is the most physical player in the draft. He hits everything he can. Hard. Daniels only ran 4.86 at the Combine. That’s not good for a LB. But he is smart and instinctive. He makes plays by getting into the right position. The Wide 9 can put pressure on LBs to defeat blockers. Daniels has no problems with that. He will take on and shed blockers.

The Eagles brought Daniels to Philly for a visit last spring. They also had a private workout with him. This is a player they had serious interest in. If he can’t get healthy and doesn’t pan out, so be it. But this guy is an ideal MLB for the Wide-9. He can sit in there all by himself and destroy whatever is closest to him.
If he is healthy and able to earn a roster spot as a STer and backup MLB, Joe Walker could move outside. Walker is the better athlete and could play WLB or SAM. Of course, we need Walker to get healthy as well.

Seems like a whole lotta 'we need to see them get healthy' type options to me. Hopefully they get healthy but...... what the hell. Guess we will just have to wait to see
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
            Hope is not a strategy
            RIP

I'm not expecting a whole lot from Daniels although Mays did have a pretty good career after he left Philly. That was the period when we had the worst LB coaches for an extended time after Spags left. That's a real good comparison WC. I'd guess that he's either still hurting or is a real liability in the passing game if he got waived.

He's coming from a Snyder led team, throw logic out the window.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.
