  • Observations from yesterdays game

Tough tough tough time right now. We won the NFC East, but lost Wentz. Baring a miracle that Foles reclaims 27-2 we pretty much should expect a 1 and done in the playoffs.

    1. Who are you and what have you done with our run defense? Gurley is a very good back and has deceptive speed. However, the Eagles played very undisciplined especially the ends.

    2. Wentz had his best game of the year. the INT should have been defensive holding very clear tugging of the jersey. I am devastated right now that we have lost this guy.

    3. Ajayi is clearly our best back followed by Clement. Blount just doesn't have enough speed to hit the hole against a fast defense.

    4. Tory Smith welcome to the party. I thought he played very well yesterday.

    5. The officials were terrible in yesterdays game and it was on both sides of the ball. I already mentioned the miss on Agholor and the INT, the special teams call later in the game was terrible on the Rams. Now from a points standpoint that didn't hurt as the Eagles just kicked a field goal later however it did take more time off the clock. I didn't think the Johnson holding call was legit on the Wentz TD run.

    6. Trey Burton needs to be more envolved in this offense, especially with Ertz. They need to get creative here. The good thing is Burton, Ertz and Celek have all played with Foles before, I would bet that comfort level comes pretty quick with them. Will take longer with Jeffrey, Agholor, Smith and Hollins.

    7. Young Hollins needs to catch that ball on that pass in the end zone. That was an easy TD.

    8. I thought that the safeties were terrible yesterday. In fact Jenkins has not played well for several weeks.

    9. The special teams have not been special since Maragos went down. Fipp's luster is starting to wear off. He has to get these guys ready to play. A special assist to Donnie Jones on that punt block, his approach seems to get slower and slower to the ball. A good friend of mine was a punter in college and he has been saying that for a few weeks. I watched it closely yesterday and he is right.

    10. No mention on the broadcast of Wiz being hurt. Every time a Rams player got a hang nail they mentioned it. Can we get a broadcast that is fair to both sides of the ball. I shouldn't have to turn to twitter to find out my starting LG is out of the game. I will say this I am betting that there were more Eagles fans watching that game than Rams fans, I think all the Rams fans all 10 of them were at the game yesterday

I am totally depressed right now. 57 years and counting. I don't know if the Eagles would have won the Super Bowl this year with Wentz. I liked our chances and was enjoying the ride. With Foles I don't see it.

I think the issue with the Run D has to be overconfidence and pursuit/gap discipline issues. Maybe this will give them something for Schwartz to go over in the film room. This D has gotten pretty full of itself after some of the dominating performances.

We need Wiz and we need Ertz. With those guys healthy we might be able to get there with Foles. He is not terrible. And with more reps who knows.

At this point I just hope Wentz is healthy for 2018.

I like Ertz, and he is a high end TE, but Burton is better than people give him credit for. The reason they tendered him is they know he is the replacement for Celek and will be a good TE for the Eagles. But I agree we need Ertz back.
Gurley is good and the do a good job blocking for him but the D isn't what it was earlier in the year. Not sure if they are a little tired or if they have believed some of their press but this D has not been what it once was.
Have said all along Blount does nothing for me. Ajayi/Clement and someone are the future.
Seumalu may have a future with the team but he hasn't shown much in the times he is in the game. Not sure what the deal is with Wiz but I sure hope he is back and back at full strength.
QBs take a beating and Wentz has taken LOTS of hits already. I am sure they are in his ear about not taking unnecessary hits but he really needs to work on that. Hopefully this isn't a serious ACL issue. I've posted elsewhere that I have always been good with Foles and see him as one of the better back up options in the league
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
      Hope is not a strategy

When the game ended, my wife came into the living room and asked if I was ready to walk our pup, as we do each evening. When I replied that I didn't feel much like walking tonight she responded, "You're being so quiet. They won didn't They? Why are you acting so strangely? " (Gail likes the Eagles and is very understanding of my life long obsession with them. But she knows next to nothing about football.)

I told her Carson Wentz got hurt and may well be out for the season. She replied, "I heard that on the TV you left on in the kitchen. That's too bad but it's not like he's the whole team. They're so good this year. Can't they win without him?"

I said, "Not the Super Bowl."

I have been nauseous since they announced it last night and I can’t shake it. Imagine how Wentz feels.

The ONLY thing I will say about RG play... whomever it is. They were trying to block Donald who is one of the top 3-4 interior lineman in the league. That dude is GREAT. Big I didn’t play awful. He is better than Warmack who is so slow off the ball. Big V has grown into the LT spot also. Peters may end up playing guard next year because Big V is good enough... I always knew he was.

Pretty much the same story in my house. If Wentz wasn't such a great guy it might be easier to take. I feel really bad for us and just as much for him. I think the team will rally but winning it all isn't in the cards anymore.

Agree with you guys pretty much with the double sword being beating the Rams & at the same time losing Wentz. Gotta wait on the MRI, hoping it's a sprained ACL but expecting the worse. I think Foles is a really solid backup but let's face it, he's not Wentz.
Dougie needs to channel his "Inner Dick Vermeil" and tell the troops the season is far from over & WE WILL WIN WITH NICK FOLES!
Whether or not that happens or not, we'll just have to wait & see.
              GO BIRDS!!!
Just give me ONE before I go!

I don't think its overconfidence, I actually think the back to back on the road on the west coast may have had something to do with it. Yes they stayed out there but there is a difference sleeping in a hotel bed than sleeping in your own bed. I am sure they didn't have all of their recovery machines that they have in novacare there and quite frankly they looked tired and slow. Also lets give credit to Gurley his speed to the edge made some of those plays happen

As far as Foles goes, who had better weapons the 2013 Eagles with Shady, Maclin, Avant and Jackson and the same tight end group as now, or the 2017 Eagles with Ajayi, Jeffrey, Agholor and Smith? I think the 2013 skill position players were better. My opinion. However, the 2017 defense is much better than the 2013.

We also have a pretty good shot at getting a bye which should help a lot for that first game anyway. Defense and running game has to step up.

Yea Foles isn't going to take over a game and win it by himself (not likely anyway even if it is possible). The OL, the RBs, the defense, everyone else needs to step up and show it isn't a one man team

                      My take

                      1. DEs especially Curry continued to crash down instead of getting up the field. Bad play. But Long and Graham redeem themselves
                      2. Safeties were awful entire game! McLeod on Kupp? UGH!
                      3. STs haven't been very special mins Elliott. But Clement did take wrong guy on punt block
                      4. Officials are really off this season. BS holding on Lane was make up for taunting call! The leverage call was just brutal!
                      5. Doug got away from run. Both Ajayi and Clement need more touches than Blount. Save Blount for bad weather!
                      6. Great job by TEs!
                      7. LG after Wiz. I agree that JP may be kicked inside with Big V staying at LT next year. Don't think Isaac is ready for center either at this time.
                      8. Wentz is special! Great game! INT not on him. Truly wonderful to have him.
                      9.Bradham get some hands!
                      10. Kelce I salute you sir. Aaron Donald is a beast yet he held your own. He won a few but not as many as people would have projected! Great job!
                      11. Alshon and Aggie thank you! Torrey Smith thanks for showing up but on that long pass I really didn't see that top end speed I thought I would see!

                      12. Lastly I LOVE EAGLES FANS! When you travel this entire country like you and take over stadiums I love it! I hate that Kroneke gets the dough but its nice when the team has that kind of support everywhere they go!

Nick Foles is one of my favorite Eagles, because he is a great guy and teammate. But, Wentz is magic. You don't replace magic.

What makes matters worse is that we still have a hole at LT. Nick is just not mobile enough and does not have the same pocket presence as Carson. Mark my words, Foles will be responsible for at least 2 sack/fumbles in the next 3 games when he gets blindsided.

Like Tino said, Foles can win some games. But, it would take a minor miracle for him to play well enough to win a SB. Our defense is not the 86 Bears, 91 Eagles or 2015 Broncos.

On a positive note, I just love Doug's aggressive decisions. A few of them have not worked out. But, most of them do and have driven a dagger in the opponents when they were on the ropes. How many people really expected Doug to throw with Foles on 3rd and 8 ? I just knew that they were going to run it, get stuffed and punt the ball back leaving the Rams with 2 minutes to kick a game winning FG. Way to go Doug !

Pretty depressed like everyone else is as we are still a good team with Nick (if his elbow holds up) but not a SB team.

Please don't ever say that you shouldn't waste a first round pick on a running back. Gurley is an absolute BEAST!! LA ran out of O lineman yesterday so many of them got hurt. He still ran over, under, around and through us!!! We were in perfect position on plays to make the tackle and he just stepped on the gas and swept the end. Unreal.

WTF is Doug doing sending in a play to have your O line STANDING UP on a first and goal from the 2 1/2 yard line??? Did you see the LBs drop into the endzone because they knew that we were passing? STUPID.

Why did we totally abandon the run in the second half?

When Carson went down why didn't we try to run the ball at all? That's a whole lot of weight to put on a guy who hasn't played football in a couple of years. Doug called one friekin run play and he even had Nick under center to do it.

Smith sure outshined Mack the Knife yesterday but I think Carson threw it a split second too fast because it looked like it surprised Mack a little. Too bad for the kid.

Man Burton played great and I was wrong about him. Sorry Big Fella. Speaking about big, I still think that he gained about 15 lbs. this offseason and somehow is avoiding the piss man.

It won't ever happen. But, how about this dream-like scenario:

                            1) Foles gets hurt in the last game of the season.
                            2) A desperate Eagles team contacts Tony Romo about coming out of retirement for the playoffs.
                            3) Romo sees the Eagles potential and a chance to win a SB.
                            4) Romo wins a SB with the Eagles and then goes back into retirement.
                            5) Eagles fans are joyous and Cowboy fans are livid.

                            One can dream....right ?

Didn't read every word written here, but did anyone make mention of the terrible tackling ? It was so bad on the Kupp reception that it looked fake as shit. They looked like tackles you miss if you are trying to miss tackles.
Why did we quit running the ball ? Why do we continue to give Blount the ball moving laterally ? He is a fucking freight train when you give him the ball straight up the gut. How bad is Warmack ? To not play before Seumalo you gotta suck donkey balls.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.
