You may be right 60. Taking the pads off would likely improve player safety by forcing players to tackle differently. The problem is that we have several more generations who have learned bad techniques because of the false sense of being “indestructible” once they put the pads on.

I’m curious what the injury comparison is on a player-per play ratio between NFL players in pads and rugby players without them. Common sense would say the pads should protect the players more. But the ‘superman syndrome’ that comes from the pads causes players to do things they likely wouldn’t do if they were unprotected. I imagine we wouldn’t see things like leading with the head, horse-collars tackles and leaving your feet among others.

I was really just being funny Juk with that big horse running through a bunch of kids and nobody getting hurt. If the NFL went back to leather helmets they would accomplish what they are looking for. The game would change out of necessity and there would be a lot less concussions but more lawsuits for the guys that got them. It's a catch 22.

I've often wondered about this too. I also wonder how much, if at all, rugby players go out with/report concussions. It could be that they suffer them at the same rate but don't track/report them as much

I'm also wondering if all of the crap that these guys use has anything to do with CTE? It seems to me that none of the oldtimers were killing themselves. Maybe the juice these guys use has something to do with it?

I really do think they play more aggressively because they feel invincible with the pads on. Watch that video again and look at how they tackle. It’s shoulder first with their heads up. NFL players don’t do that in part because it’s how they learned but also because the fear is somewhat removed with the pads.

most of those guys aren't close to the athlete an NFL player is. They aren't flying into bodies like a missile. Most look like they have the speed of an O lineman. We played a lot of full contact, no pads games out in the field during my Army days and I agree, not many lead with their heads.

They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

The game has evolved. The players are bigger, faster, and stronger. And, of course, the laws of physics apply. I can't see the NFL doing away with helmets. Helmet technology is going to be the key. I think eventually you'll see helmets that break upon impact. Perhaps with a layer of some form of liquid under the shell that is released to transfer the impact energy away from the skull. So, a guy will get hit in the head, his helmet will break into pieces, and they'll have to clean up the gel that bursts out of it when it goes, but his brain won't be subject to the impact forces. Something like that.

I Played Rugby and there are 3 main Differences:
                  #1. No Blocking Permitted.
                  #2. No Forward Passes Permitted.
#3. The Play is Never Dead, in other words, there's no time to get set & "Tee Off" on Somebody. This Forces the Players to "Wrap Up" the Ball carrier instead of looking to make a "Highlight Hit" for Sports Center.
Every Sunday I complain about this with EB. I can hear Vince Lombardi in my ears screaming "What the hell's going on out there. Everybody's Grab, Grab, Grab"!

Good idea and I think it would help but nothing we do to the helmets will eliminate concussions. Imagine your skull is a car, your brain a passenger. A sudden stop of the skull from an impact doesn’t prevent your brain from smashing into the inside of the skull. Until we invent a “seatbelt” for the brain we won’t be able to stop concussions without changing the way players tackle.
