Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is planning to retire from the NFL after 15 seasons to join Monday Night Football as the lead color analyst according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.
Just 10 days ago, Witten confirmed he was going to play this season and planned to bypass a TV job until next year at the earliest so it seems apparent that ESPN sweetened their offer considerably. The network has been desperate to find a replacement for Jon Gruden and that choice is Witten according to Mortensen. Witten, who turns 36 years old next week, is reportedly meeting with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Friday to finalize the decision. We have no doubt Jerry will try to change his mind.
Originally a third-round draft pick out of the University of Tennessee way back in 2003, Witten has spent his entire NFL career with the Cowboys. In that time he produced 68 career touchdowns and caught 1,152 balls for 12,448 yards. Witten was a two-time first-team All-Pro selection and was elected to 11 Pro Bowls. He will undoubtedly be inducted into the Cowboys Ring of Honor and probably the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame.
