NFL approves new rules on kickoffs, ejections

The NFL today approved changes to kickoffs as well as replay review of all NFL player ejections, ESPN reports.

The kickoff rule changes will be reevaluated after the season.

The changes to kickoffs, designed to reduce high-speed collisions, include the following:

The elimination of running starts for kickoff coverage teams
A requirement that eight of the 11 men on the return team must be aligned in the "setup zone" within 15 yards of the ball
No blocking within the "setup zone" until after the ball touches the ground
The elimination of two-man wedge blocks
Kickoff team must have five men lined up on either side of the ball, a move that will limit schemes designed to get free runners in coverage down the field.

Looks pretty complicated; expect a few illegal formation penalties early in the year.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
    Hope is not a strategy
    RIP

A flag on a kickoff? That's the same odds as the sun rising tomorrow.

The news rule are getting us closer to flag football. The one that will effect the game the most is the leading with the helmet rule, offensive lineman and defensive lineman are now subject to that. So o lineman might as well just stand up and forget the 3 point stance. I don' t know how you avoid leading with the helmet if you are in the 3 point stance.
Were from Philly F in Philly no one likes us we DON'T CARE!

Man those exhibition games will be 6 hours long when they officiate with "points of emphasis" this year. I don't (think) that I mind the kickoff rule changes though. I was never a wedge buster when I played but those guys really had balls!! It sounds like the returns might be more wide open with everybody lined up close to each other within 15 yards of the ball. ST coaches actually came up with that idea.

I have no idea what this means: No blocking within the "setup zone" until after the ball touches the ground

So does that mean that if the returner catches the kick in the air nobody is allowed to block for him?
