  • A closer look at the immediate schedule of the NFC East

If things go as they normally should in the next three weeks (until we play Dallas), we are looking at some favorable times.

Next week, we play the Giants and the other two slam each other. If we win, we get a two game lead over two of the four teams. I think Dallas beats the Redskins this time, and the NFC East stands at Eagles 2-0, Dallas 1-1, NYG and Skins 0-2.

The week after, the Giants visit the Seahawks and we visit San Fransisco. I am going to assume that we get by that one without any significant chances of surprise. While I also think the Giants will win, the Seahawks just might get away from the curses and beat them. But for the sake of argument, lets assume the Giants win. The Cowboys have a bye, and the Redskins visit Houston (win). So after that week, we can sit at 3-0, Dallas at 1-1, NYG at 1-2 and Washington at 1-2.

Then we head to week 4. Dallas has an easy game in Tennessee, which I think they'll get by. Washington hosts the Jaguars, who I think will beat them. The Jags have a good team, and I simply don't think the Redskins will be a good team. The Giants have a bye, while we have a chance to break the single game interception record hosting the Pack. Standings after that week should be us at 4-0, Dallas at 2-1, NYG at 1-2, Washington at 1-3 (if they beat Jacksonville, they go at 2-2).

And we head into Week 5 with our big matchup with Dallas. In the meantime, Washington visits the Giants, where I believe they will lose to Tiki, and while New York reaches 0.500 at 2-2, Washington gets in a hole at 1-4.
For us? Well, we get a chance to build a THREE game lead over the rest of the NFC East by winning over Dallas, sending them at 2-2, and us going at 5-0. Truth be told, a three game lead in the division is huge.

After week 5, we get to visit New Orleans, we get to visit Tampa (perhaps they come back to earth this year) and we host Jacksonville before our bye week. If we are 7-0 going into the Jacksonville game, I personally think that by then the team will be playing much better, so I think we beat the Jags. But even if we lose, we'll be at 7-1 heading into our bye week.

Dallas gets Houston, hosts the Giants, and visits Carolina. I think they win two out of three there and follow us. They'll likely be at 4-3 or 5-2 if they win out those three.

Washington gets Tennessee and visits Indy, then they have their bye. I see them winning one, losing one. Probably at 2-5.

Lastly the Giants visit Atlanta, visit Dallas and then host Tampa. I believe they'll lose to Atlanta and Dallas, and beat the Bucs at home. If that happens, they'll be at 3-4, if they beat Atlanta they'll be at 4-3.

So by week 8, and assuming we win our home NFC East games, the probable standings in the NFC East will be at best (for the Eagles)

    Philadelphia at 8-0.
    Dallas at 4-3.
    New York at 3-4.
    Washington at 2-5.

And for the worst case, in case we win our home divisional games, the table will look like:

Philadelphia at 7-1 (loss to Jags).
    Dallas at 5-2 (beats Carolina)
New York at 4-3 (beats Atlanta)
    Washington at 3-4 (beats Jacksonville).

I think that a two game lead over the Giants and the Redskins should be a good sign going into our bye week, and I think that Dallas will stay close (a game back) if they get by Carolina). I think the Redskins will eventually fade like they used to do all the years before last year, and I think we'll be playing much better football as the season goes by (a norm for Andy Reid's teams who play their best in October and November (and December) rather than September.

And considering our track record after a bye week is really good, us hosting the Redskins after the bye gives us a chance to go into the second half of the season with a good lead!

The only issue that worries me is if we lose to Tampa, and the Cowboys do win out, then we'll be at 6-2 and they'll be at 5-2. And during our bye week they visit the Skins, with a chance to tie us, with the second half of the schedule not doing us any favors. We clearly need to win over Tampa to make our selves a favor. If we lose to Tampa however, I think they will beat the Jaguars. The Eagles do not tend to lose two in a row under Andy when the starters are playing, and if we lose to Tampa I see them focused at all costs to beat the Jaguars.

    Thoughts?

    As it stands right now...

The hardest schedule belongs to the Green Bay Packers and SF 49ers. Opp +6 (Wins - Losses)
The easiest schedule belongs to the Philadelphia Eagles. Opp -8 (Wins - Losses)
