  • Wentz vs Foles

Ok come on admit it, you all are thinking the same thing. While Wentz is the more talented QB, Foles just has something going on with this team that is undeniable. What if we go forward with Foles and traded Wentz.

I have been firmly been in the Wentz court as I see him as a Superstar who has been slowed by injury at times. But when he is on he is one of the top 3 QB's in football. His march to the MVP last year demonstrated that. He probably came back too soon this year which led to a perceived production decline. However, looking deeper he actually had a higher completion percentage threw 21-7 TD to Int in 10 games. While his YPC went down about a yard from last year (and thus the deep ball issues he was having) you are still looking at a QB who is top 10 in the league playing with a hurt back. Wentz has 1 year plus he option year left on his contract.

Foles is 4 years older and has an up and down history. However the downs have not been in Philadelphia. He of course is the reining Super Bowl MVP, now leads this team with the most passing yards in a game. He is a Top 15 QB in the NFL right now. Doug seems to call a better game when he is at QB. He has an option for next year at 20 million.

Of the two contracts I think Foles can be had for an Average 5-7 mill less than Wentz per year. That is a significant in a cap environment

So what if for a second the Eagles considered making a Hershel Walker type deal with Wentz to say Jacksonville. Jacksonville is so starved for a QB, I can see a 3 1st, 3 2nd (spread out over 5 years), Jalen Ramsey, Cam Robinson (Young LT) , wild card player like Dawuane Smoot type deal (I don't think we will ever see 18 players like the Dal-Vik deal changing hands again) Eagles may need to put some third day picks in to make this work. Yes I do think they could get something close to this as there is no QB coming out this year that is even in the class of Wentz or close to.

In that scenario you get your young up and coming left tackle in Robinson (who played well until he was hurt this year), you get your shut down corner in Ramsey. Wild card player in Smoot to add to a de line that needs some depth. The crown Jewell will be the picks. Jacksonville is top 10 this year. So maybe a stud defensive lineman. Take a WR at out pick, RB in the second round.

If we truly believe in Foles then this scenario makes some sense. Still for what they went through to get Wentz is hard to see them do this but.... The converse is to let Foles go and probably to Washington or New York for a 3rd round comp pick in 2020.

This of course is not that cut and dry but this is the decision Howie, Doug and Jeffrey are faced with. I wouldn't doubt there will be some divide there. Especially if Howie starts getting calls on Wentz in the territory of the deal I mentioned above.

Wentz isn't going anywhere nor should he. Nick has been magic at times for this team but it's Doug's job to get the very most out of a guy who has Canton talent. It's Howie's job to figure out how to make a trade work for Nick and if he is the "All Hail Howie" guy everybody thinks that he is he will. He's the Monte Hall of GMs when it comes to this stuff.

Foles has been showing his maturity in the position and his successful command of the offense as well as his savvy for reading defenses.

Wentz lacks that maturity in the position. He still looks to extend plays and make miracles happen because that’s how he’s always played. He needs to get the ball out quicker and slide in the pocket vs scrambling to get a first down.

If he does this, he will leapfrog Nick.

I agree that he isn't going anywhere but you have to say there is at least a scenario where he could. Its a scenario that has a ton of moving parts but you have to say this, Are the Eagles better with:

          1. Foles, Jalen Ramsey at Corner, Cam Robinson at Left Tackle, two high picks (Say it Jeffrey Simmons at DT and Damien Robinson at RB). Plus they can two more young players the next year etc.

          2. Wentz as the starting QB and a 3rd round comp pick in 2020 for Foles. Remember the Eagles don't control if Foles comes back next year, Foles can opt in and the Eagles can opt out, or the Eagles can opt in and Foles can opt out (which I think he will) and either scenario he is a free agent.

I believe this team can win and win Super Bowls with either QB.

I love Foles and I was a very staunch supporter of keeping him this year. But he is NOT the future of the Eagles. Simple as that. The questions you pose--- are all hypothetical --- if we had Barley at RB, and Donald at DE, and Mack on the other end and Clowney at LB, and Atonio Brown at WR --- we would on paper be a better team. Wrong way to play it, IMM.

Hey I would LOVE to find a way to keep them both again.

I'll say it again--- Wentz is NOT going anywhere so thinking of all these scenarios is just a waste of time and energy.

Absolutely hypothetical. What is the future? How many years out? 5 years 10 years etc. 5 years Foles absolutely can do that he is 34 at the end Of that run. Lots of QB are still excellent then. 10 years? A lot can happen in that time span.

Look I agree that Wentz is the future but if they are blown away with an offer and that is the type of offer I am taking about a blow away one do you do it? Because I can see a scenario where that could happen. I wouldn’t want to be Howie then

If you traded Wentz - which I think they have considered - you could lose part of your locker room. Trading a guy that is hurt and young and shows so much promise could blow up on you. Maybe not and again I’m sure it has been discussed.

The bigger issue to me is if Foles rolls next week then teams like Miami, Jax, and possibly and my dark horse the Patriots (if Brady retires) might want him. How do you put the tag on him and get a deal that gets u more than just a compensatory pick?

The other scenario is he signs a 3 year $36 million deal and you have the best backup in the league.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

Hells no! the kid is going to turn 26 in a week. Get him a running game and he will explode again.

i will say that he has had a rough year. Similar to the way DMAC used to only throw it to guys that were wide open. He does need to learn to give his receivers a chance. Hopefully he is seeing that right now.

I was going to post something similar about the age, Wentz has 10-12 more years (assuming he stops scrambling to extend plays where he gets crunched) and I’d like to see what Wentz would look like with a full off-season, full camp, and a REAL #1 RB- oh, and not a new OC or QB coach in their first years in the position.

The ceiling is much higher on Wentz (although BDN certainly challenges that theory with a SB MVP). I think you either have to trade him while he’s still under contract or you let him walk and let someone overpay him.

I have nothing but love for Foles, but a hard cap minimizes the options.

Give Wentz an off season to work on football instead of rehabbing a knee. Look at the leaps he took between 2016 and 2017. He’s going nowhere except Philly.

I'll play the game as everyone knows it is very hypothetical. Everyone on the team is a commodity. In that sense everyone is expendable depending on the return. Can Doug & Co see going into a year with Foles/Sudfeld? Probably. Will anyone ever give a Herscel trade again? Doubtful. Bottom line for me is no player is untouchable but I can't believe anyone could give me enough to trade Wentz. But if they did...…. I might
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
                          Hope is not a strategy

The fucked up thing about this season is that we are looking at 8 & 8 or 9 & 7. That is what I expected last year. Last year we went 13 and 3 and made it to the Super Bowl. That is more like what I expected this year. Clearly, the football gods are fucking with us!
