Eagles draft: What the team sees in PSU’s Shareef Miller
    Nick Fierro
    By NICK FIERRO

The Eagles first made Shareef Miller, a fan who grew up in Philadelphia, cry tears of joy by winning the Super Bowl in February of 2018.

Some 14 months later, they made him cry again by bringing the Penn State defensive end onto their team as a fourth-round draft pick.

Miller joins the squad after overcoming a tragedy in which his mentor and older brother was shot to death on the streets of West Philadelphia just before Miller was about to start his Penn State career. Miller perservered and finished a fine college career in style with 41 tackles, including 15 for losses, and 7.5 sacks in 2018.

In this fourth installment of a five-part series, we look at why the Eagles made the decision to draft him and what it portends for Miller this year and down the road.

    Notables still on the board
Alabama S Deionte Thompson, Washington LB Ben Burr-kirven, USC S Marvell Tell, Texas A&M DE Kingsley Keke.

    Why they preferred Miller
Bottom line is that they feel that his quick burst off the line gives them enough raw material to make good use of in their Wide 9.

Miller can be coached up on the rest the stuff, including poor usage of his hands, playing with a pad level that’s too high and not utilizing enough variety of moves to get past the blocker.

“[Defensive coordinator Jim] Schwartz lets those linemen go,” Miller said. "When I came to the Eagles for the local [pro] day, he told me that I am great fit, I’m a guy they need. He loved that I had a basketball background and he loved that when he watched me on film. He said when you see some guys on film, they look stiff and robotic, and he said I don’t. He said I looked smooth and fluent.

" ... He just told me I’m the type of player that they want for how they like the defensive linemen to be. That was really great coming from him."

    Why Miller could fail
As mentioned earlier, he needs to work on some deficiencies that must be overcome for him to contribute. He must become a better hand fighter and learn a variety of moves to go along with instinct that tells him when to use them. Miller also must improve against the run.

    Immediate projection
If Chris Long returns, it’s going to be difficult for Miller to crack the four-man rotation this season, with Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett and Vinny Curry already seemingly locked in. That’s fine with the Eagles, who would then hope to have Miller ready for next year, when there will be more openings.

“I’m just trying to come in with my head down and work,” Miller said. “Just learn from my new teammates and my coaches. We’ve got a great group of guys in the room. We’ve got Brandon Graham, Vinny Curry – a lot of guys I looked up to – Chris Long, Fletcher Cox – a lot of guys I can learn from, and I’m just super excited. I’m just ready to work, that’s it, just put my head down and soak up all the knowledge I can from the older guys in the D-line room and learn from them how to be a professional.”

The kid needs to bulk up some but the raw tools are there. Good pick for the end of the 4th round. Think he has a good chance to develop into a quality starter in this league. You can't teach his burst.
Were from Philly F in Philly no one likes us we DON'T CARE!

Like all rooks coming into the league he will have to work to be able to excel in the NFL. I don't see him being the stud that I expect from Barnett (1st rd of course) but should he work at it he could be another Vinny Curry in my mind. And that isn't bad I don't think
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
        Hope is not a strategy
        RIP
