  • My Take on last nights game

There is much to talk about this game. My overall impression is this team came out flat last night. I think the combination of Westbrook not being able to go and the level of competition contributed to it. I really don't think they were looking towards Dallas as I am sure most of the writers will say today.

    1. This team just can't seem to escape the injury bug. Stallworth came back but it was obvious on the two fly patterns he ran he was not at 100%. Reggie Brown got hurt but he did come back into the game. He was in on the first Garcia seriesNarducci missed that in his article this morning. I think that Brown will play next week. Stallworth probably won't. I hope that Westbrook,Sheppard and Hood are well enough to play next week, Dallas is a very good football team and we need to go after them with all of our weapons

    2. Jim Johnson deserves credit for his game plan last night. He loves to blitz but on a night when he faced a team that rarely throws deep he hardly blitzed. In fact I think I only saw 8 or 9 blitz's. The defense played really better than it appears last night. They intercepted two balls, they recovered a fumble, Green Bay threw the ball 47 times last night and only had 219 yards. Thats not so good. Green Bay ran the ball 28 times for 99 yards. Once again that is not good. The interesting thing is they had zero sacks last night. That was not a function of the Eagles defense though it was the Packers 3 step drop and get the ball out philosphy.

    3. Green Bay's kicker is really impressive. Kid has a heck of a leg. I also like their punter (who for the most part was very good last night)

    4. Donovan McNabb did not have a very good game last night. He made somenice throws and his overall stats of 16-30 for 288 yards and he accounted for 4 td's two by the air and two by his legs. Just looking at those numbers you would think he played great but watching the game you saw him miss alot of throws to wide open recievers, he took three sacks on 3rd downs when they were in field goal position, that backed them out of field goal position. Those are not good. I only attribute one of those sacks to the O line when Todd Heremens got overloaded on a blitz and fanned on both players, still McNabb should have been able to throw the ball away there

    5. It was nice to see Ryan Moats come in and spark the team but there is something there with this kid. I am not sure what it is and I don't understand why he only was in on 9 plays. I don't know if its his hands, I don't know if its his blocking,I don't know if they don't trust him with the ball due to fumbles, but there has to be a reason why he is not playing. He is obvioulsy more explosive than Buckhalter and that explosiveness is what was missing last night without.

    6. After watching Buckhalter fumble twice inside the five yard line I wonder if Andy was second guessing not signing Steven Davis?

    7. Greg Lewis made up for his fumble of last week. He had a really nice game last night

    8. I absolutely love the young DT's on this team. Bunkley was really active last night. He was in on alot of plays. Ramsey seems to be getting better and better and Mike Patterson is playing really well right now. The only player who seems to be regressing is Darwin Walker. He is taking too many dumb penalties.

    9. I wonder how much Theisman's knees hurt this morning. He was all over Favre Jock last night even though. Someone needs to tell him when you throw the ball 44 times and only have 200 yards passing and No td's to show for along with 2 interceptions you are not having a good game. It was too the point that it was sickening. Oh and the half time show, I am not sure who it was, but after the jacked up segment the announcer said that the Eagles were being Jacked Up by the packers. Can you tell me just how a game that was 9-7 (on a 54 yard field goal BTW) was being jacked up? Maybe somebody should jack up ESPN.

    10. Why did the Eagles try a fake field goal at the end of the half? Akers can hit it from 54, give the guy a shot.

He's been doing this his whole career and it's maddening. Other teams have to know this and come after him in that area of the field.

What is Joe going to talk about when Aaron Rogers is the QB? " Bad throw by Aaron there. Farve would have... Brett Farve, Brett Farve, Brett Farve, Brett Farve, Brett Farve, Brett Farve, Brett Farve, ..."

Nice post Taz, but I have one quibble.

It seems that in many of the analysis this morning that people are writing our lack of pass rush from the front four off to three step drops.

Yes, that helped Green Bay, but Favre also had many 5 and 7 step drops and we still couldn't sniff him. OUr pass rush was anemic last night and if we give Statue Bledsoe that much time next week, he will pick us apart with all his weapons. Cole got beat up pretty good.

I suspect we will see more blitzes next Sunday. Also, maybe Johnson shuold play around a bit and switch Cole and Howard's defensive end spots.

mcnabb seemed overhyped for monday night football

he was throwing those darts that end up too low half the time,
he was trying to pull another play like he did in dallas,
but at the same time, he was trying to 'stay in the pocket'

        anyone else notice that,
the tds were on balls hung up there for our wr's,
as taz pointed out, those plays where he was trying to be mr elusive, he got 'jacked up' (God i hate that)
the plays he decided it was ok to get out of the pocket resulted in 3rd down first downs, some time bought, and a pair of td runs (one was a draw..)

        -

still the best qb in the nfc
Five straight losses, including a crucial one at Dallas on Christmas Day, send them out against Atlanta, needing the win, plus help. -Dr. Z, 8/31/06

Ty, GB played a lot of max protect, and kept extra blockers in. Generally speaking it was 4 on 6 last night, and you can't expect to have much success with that. Plus, Favruh was usually getting rid of the ball as soon as anyone got near him, regardless of whether he had an open reciever or not. He is AFRAID to get hit.

As for the comment about the Eagles getting "jacked up", that was our boy Stu Scott. Natch.

And therin lies the beauty of playing against Brett Favre. He'll always come through with those dumb plays when it hurts the Packers the most. How this clown won a Super Bowl is beyond me. He might be the stupidest QB this side of Michael Vick.

That's not true FRESH. I watched some of the replays on TIVO. Cole struggled a bit one on one for much of the night. Our DTs were inconsistent with their push up the middle.

The pass rush was disappointing last night IMO. I expect it will be better next week. It had better be.

NOTE: I did just look up Green Bay's sack numbers and through 3 games they had only given up 5 sacks. So that makes me feel a bit better.

Ty, how often did you see us send extra blitzers last night? ANd that's not our usual game. We played a conservative game defensively to protect ourselves from the big play. As you notice, Michael Lewis was actualy in position deep in coverage to make a few plays, and so was Dawk. We were not bringing the heat as a team, nor as a scheme.

Its really hard to get sacks when the other team is three step drop and throw the ball 5-8 yards down the field. Like I said in my orginal post the fact that we didn't get sacks were more of the function of the Green Bay offense vs the Eagles defense

I'm not worried about the pass rush. last night's game play was to keep the S back and support the corners. Favre isn't big on patience and JJ figured soft zones were the ticket, especially when GB could not run the ball, and we started building a lead. 44 pass plays, 200 yards, no TD's. That's a pretty good night by the Eagles D.

Let me clarify since I did a crappy job of explaining my point. I am not talking about our overall pass rush (which includes blitzing). I know we didn't blitz a lot.

My concern was the lack of any pass rush out of our front four. One of the strengths of this team (at least coming into the season) was that we thought we might be able to generate a consistent pass rush with our base front four. Maybe my expectations of the ability of our front four to rush the passer without Kearse was a bit bold.

I didn't see that last night. My concern is getting caught in a situation next week and later in the year where we have to constantly blitz to just get QB pressure.

                        Except this is not true.

Like I said, I rewatched part of the game via TIVO since I couldn't sleep. Favre had more five and seven step drops than people think. And our DL rarely got good pressure on Favre in those situations. Cole did not have a good game at all.

All I am saying in a game where everything seemed to look very good and there was not much to complain about (other than a sloppy start), the lack of any pass rush from our front four without blitzing (which we rarely did), was a bit disappointing for me.

Let me put it another way. If the front four plays like that next week, we may be in trouble.

Favre was mostly taking 3 steps and spitting the ball out. It's tough to get in a groove hand fighting the OL and the ball in gone in two seconds. This OL will be great against a statue like Bledsoe who takes 7 step drops and will wait for TO and Glenn to work downfield. Favre didn't do that, I can't remember Favre once trying to hit a home run on the Birds..

I hear ya Taz. But consider this. When the guy (QB) is constantly getting rid of it the way God was last night, it just might have an effect on your agressiveness to get to him. Gotta be frustrating. I think they resorted to mainly playing gap control.

I would LIKE to have seen more pressure. But our chances of getting sacks last night were slim, and none, and slim left town.
