  • Rushing defense

There has been quite a bit of discussion about the pass rush last night and why it was ineffective.

    But...

What are your thoughts on the rushing defense last night? Morency ran for 99 yards, which has me more than a bit nervous about Julius Jones.

hard to say...tiki ran for 52 two weeks ago???

the D seems a bit different without Kearse.

I'm not concerned about the rush defense. We had our nickel package in for a large portion of the game which means there were available running lanes most of the night.

True but I was surprised that the Pack OL was able to move our DTs last night with some effectiveness last night.

Trotter is huge in this game.

Well, that 99 yards came on 26 carries, which isn't so great. And it seemed like most of his effective carries came in the second half when the Eagles had the lead and were playing pass. I don't know what Morency's 1st half rushing total was, but it couldn't have been very much.

I am not worried about our run defense at all. It's been absolutely stellar.

i think the run defense has been fine. i am a bit worried about the dallas game, simply because the cowboys did such a great job last year sealing off the edges and running outside on the eagles.

but jones and mccoy are playing pretty solid football right now. mccoy in particular is doing a very good job taking on bigger blockers and shedding them in time to make a play.

I don't think we've allowed a long outside run or screen all season so far, especially not in a big game. I'm a lot more worried about why our pass rush disappears at the worst times against QBs who are hardly paragons of mobility, as I expect us to give Bledsoe a much harder time than we gave Favre last night.

i think the pass rush disappeared in the first half last night for several reasons:

                1. Favre was taking quick drops and getting rid of the ball quickly, mostly throwing underneath. I think that's directly attributable to the 16 sacks the d-line had in the first three games.

                2. JJ wanted to help the beat-up secondary as much as possible. Lots of nickel packages early. No blitzing and leaving guys on an island. Keep everything in front of you.

                3. No Kearse. They've got a lot of talent on the d-line, but he is the real playmaker. He's a Jerome Brown-like presence, IMO -- he just fills up a room. the d-line has to reorganize itself a bit.

Once they got a lead, JJ dialed up the heat some. They didn't get sacks, but they got a lot more pressure in the second half.

No sacks was a result of the Favre duck and chuck. If the QB is getting the ball out in 3 second or less there isn't much you can do unless your guy goes comletely unblocked.

I'm telling you, Hanson's presence was a BIG part of the lack of pass rush. Favre knew exactly where to target every time he had to get rid of the ball. With Hood or Lito on the field, he still has to find someplace to throw, which takes that extra second the pass rush needed.
