Report: Eagles interested in signing Carlos Hyde
    137
Veteran addition coming to the RB room?

The Philadelphia Eagles are interested in signing free agent running back Carlos Hyde, according to NFL insider Adam Caplan.

Caplan recently said as much during an Inside The Birds podcast with Geoff Mosher.

“They want to sign a veteran running back. […] The guy that I know they have some interest in, and we’ll see if it happens, is a guy that’s really, really talented. […] The Eagles, I’m told, have interest in him. […] I’m told Hyde is a guy they’re targeting.

Caplan said Hyde is the player he was alluding to when he previously reported the Eagles were considering signing a veteran running back.

BGN listed Hyde as a potential target in our “free agents the Eagles can sign now that it won’t impact their compensatory pick formula” post from two weeks ago. Here’s what we wrote about him at the time:

If the Eagles are looking for a big, physical veteran running back to replace Jordan Howard, Hyde fits the bill. He’s actually coming off a career season where he logged 245 attempts for 1,070 yards (4.4 average) and six touchdowns with the Houston Texans.

    Hyde turns 30 in September.

One thing I forgot to mention is that Hyde actually overlapped with current Eagles senior offensive assistant Rich Scangarello on the San Francisco 49ers back in 2017. So, there’s some level of familiarity to be considered here.

Hyde should be a relatively affordable addition considering: he’s still on the market in May, he’s about to turn 30, and he plays the most fungible position in the NFL. Fumbles have also been an issue for him. Still, the Eagles could get a good deal by signing Hyde not unlike when they inked LeGarrette Blount on the cheap back in May 2017.

Signing Hyde would give the Eagles more depth behind Miles Sanders. Those two plus Boston Scott filling the old Darren Sproles role figures to make for a pretty good backfield trio. Corey Clement, Elijah Holyfield, Mike Warren, and Adrian Killins can then battle it out for a fourth running back spot.

We’ll just have to see if the Eagles’ rumored interest in Hyde comes to fruition.

Hyde would be a decent replacement as they are very similar. But, if Hyde ends up signing for 4 or 5 million a year, I would have rather kept Howard. But, for -2.5 million for 1 year ? Hell yeah.

One word does scare me though-FUMBLER! I'm hoping Clement comes back at full strength.

Yep. We already have a lot of guys with suspect hands and a possible new punt returner that fumbled a lot of his returns in college.

I am hoping DJ is healthy enough to return punts this year. I don't trust the rookie after seeing him fumble several of his punt returns last year.

I thought that Ward did a decent job back there Pliny. He hardly had any chances to return one but he was very sure handed.
