Sunday obviously wasn't a big deal to him, he gets tight in big games. Terrell said so (ducks for cover!!!!!!!)
"Philly fans are great....It's the only place where you pull up on the bus and you've got the grandfather, the grandmother, the kids and the grandkids - everybody flicking you off. At other stadiums, they give you the thumbs-down. Here, they give you the middle finger.”
      — Michael Strahan

"No one likes us, no one likes us, no one likes us, we don’t care, we’re from Philly, F—-ing Philly, No one likes us, we don’t care!”

Best Of McNabb Is The Best Start Ever

        October 9, 2006

Donovan McNabb is scorching hot, so hot that, according to ESPN's Ron Jaworski, his five-game start to the season is the best in history.
        In McNabb's history, right?

"No," says Jaworski, "the best ever. No quarterback has ever had 1,500 yards, 10-plus touchdowns and one interception or less in the first five games of a season."

        Wow. Incredible.

And while the pace is amazing, there is reason to think McNabb -- and the offense, for sure -- can be even better in the weeks to come.

QB Donovan McNabb is off to a great start, and things can get better
This is an offense with a tremendous amount of youth. Left guard Todd Herremans is in his first year as a starter there. Center Jamaal Jackson had never played in an NFL regular season game 12 months ago. Right guard Shawn Andrews has one full year of starting experience under his belt. Starting receiver Reggie Brown is in his second year and rookie Hank Baskett is still learning how to play wide receiver at this level. Fullback Thomas Tapeh is in his first season at the position as a starter.

Sure, the Eagles have bookend veteran tackles in William Thomas and Jon Runyan, and L.J. Smith has clearly become a go-to tight end. Running back Brian Westbrook is as dangerous as they come in a variety of ways.

But when you think about it, the Eagles have a lot of Midnight Green around the gills. They're kids, for crying out loud. And they are only going to improve with more playing time and more practice time working with McNabb, the conductor of the symphony.

Also, the Eagles need to get more going in the running, as Andy Reid acknowledged to me during a conversation in his office on Monday afternoon.

"I need to dial it up more," said Reid.

Mindful of the lack of balance the Eagles had last year, expect a closer ratio to 60/40 pass to run plays in the coming weeks. The fact is, with McNabb at quarterback, the Eagles can call whatever they want.

We're seeing a quarterback in total command on the field. The game is slow for McNabb, who has passed for 1,602 yards and 11 touchdowns in five games. He has thrown just one interception and has, tossed only a single interception (against Houston in the first quarter) this year. McNabb has not, knock on wood, thrown an interception in a span of 171 attempts.

And he isn't throwing dink-and-dunk passes, either. McNabb averages an NFL-best 9.10 yards per pass attempt. That means he's hurrying the ball down the field for an offense that has been more explosive than any other in the NFL this season.

"You know that with Donovan," says Baskett, "every time a play is called you have a chance to have the ball come your way. It's totally different than in college. You knew you were getting it or you didn't. Here, every play is alive with Donovan."

Says Jaworski: "He is doing everything right -- reading coverages, working the pocket, making the right decisions. It happens with the elite quarterbacks. He has always had the talent, but now he has the head and the experience to match that talent.

"I think it certainly helps that he has Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg designing the offense. They are doing a great job identifying a defense's weakness and then exploiting those weaknesses with the passing game or the running game. I love what the Eagles are doing offensively.

"Look, Donovan has been in the same scheme for eight years. He has had the same head coach for eight years. The talent around him has improved every year. He is in a really good situation and you see how he is responding."

These are good times, indeed. The Eagles won't score 24 or 31 points every week, for sure. Defenses are making adjustments to counter the adjustments. Round and round we go, one chess move for another.

Hey, if you want to protect the queen, Reid and Mornhinweg will chip away and take all of your pawns and gradually work their way to the prizes. You want to take chances, like the Cowboys did with their blitz game, and McNabb will find some help and step up and go for the kill shot.

We're seeing a quarterback at the top of his game and, apparently, at the top of anybody's game. McNabb is playing great football. The Eagles are scoring points in gulps.

"Yeah, but we still feel we're leaving points on the field," said wide receiver Greg Lewis. "That's something we need to work on."

That's something that is really, really exciting. The best, we hope, is yet to come for McNabb and this offense.
