  • Learning how to win all over again...

I'll post game specific thoughts later in another thread, but I have to say what I think is driving most of us crazy.

In most of the Reid-McNabb era, the Eagles were a team that found a way to win. Often against "more talented" teams, particularly pre-2002. And on the road.

Now we have to swallow 3 losses in the first 7 that, quite frankly, were the resulkt of the Eagles beating themselves more than any opponent taking it to them. This is not sour grapes, the stats bear this out.

In thinking about how the Birds have now learned to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, I looked at who made the key mistakes. Yesterday it was McNabb-- but he made the key big plays too that put us in a position to win.

The real deal is we are relying on a TON of kids who weren't even part of the Super Bowl run in 2004. The 2005 and 2006 draft classes have to learn how to WIN in the NFL. So when McDougle, who was drafted ion 2003 but has rarely been on the field since then, looses his cool, its maddening but also a learning experience. Same with Cole kicking a dudes nutz in the Giants game, or Gaither being the 12 th man on the field to negate a game winning sack on Brees. Or the drops by Baskett in NO, or the fumble by Avant yesterday. Or Moats running into our return guy. Only Mike Lewis is a repeat offender who should know better.

You have to learn how to win in the NFL.. There are growing pains with young guys--thats why Parcells and Gibbs won't build a team in DC or Dallas with young guys across the board--it takes too much time, and their egos can't handle the inevitable bad plays.

Hang in there. I have been saying all year that this team will be much better in December than it will be early on. The way to learn how to win in the NFL is to make mistakes and learn from them, and later make big plays in the smae spot, and then grow in confidence from there.

One final thought: In the Reid era, special teams have always been great and one edge that won us alot of close games. That, and Reid's insistance on not turning the ball over. I think the ST's are just average to maybe below average right now. The coverage on kicks has been OK, just not great. And that return at the end yesterday was too much. And nobody breaks a big return like in the BMitch era. Dirk has also sucked much of this year. We are losing the hidden yardage we used to win. After the 4 turnovers. we may now be even on + / - That is the formula to lose in the NFL. Turn the ball over on the road, and even 1-4 teams look good.
