  • new day, same lies

So I'm still reading all these stories about whether or not Paul Hamm should give up or share his Olympic gold medal. Okay I know what you’re thinking, its old news who cares, right? Here's why: How stupid do these journalists think we are? Do they honestly think we don’t know they have been lying to us from day one? And if they would lie about something most people think is so small, then what else are they lying about?
A couple of weeks ago there was an editorial in the WSJ which said the following: “Defenders point out that the Koreans did not lodge their protest within the required time period, while detractors say that sharing a gold medal would have been a welcome act of sportsmanship”. This statement is perpetuating a falsehood just like the articles written by Christine Brennan of USA Today, Jon Heyman of Newsday, ESPN.com and many others.
These are the facts: the judges made two errors while scoring the Korean gymnast. First, they used a start (base) value that was too low. This put him in third place. Second, they neglected to deduct a penalty for a large error he made during his set. This means he should have finished fourth overall, not first as many people want us to believe. Yes, the fact is he ultimately benefited from the judges’ errors.
You see the funny thing about truth is that just because some people don’t like it doesn’t make it untrue. By the way, what happens to the other Korean gymnast who finished in second place? Does he now get bumped down because of his teammate? If two gold medals are awarded there is no silver medal? And what about the guy who finished fourth? He should have received the bronze. No one is screaming on his behalf.
Sports writers have always gotten away with murder. Since they don’t cover hard news they assume no one will notice their brew of fact and editorial. This is an even bigger problem during Olympic years when they are forced to cover sports of which they have little or no knowledge as in this case. For those of you who say who cares, how many times are you going to be slapped in the face before waking up?
