  • The Future...

I stopped living in the past yesterday actually, so now it's time for the future.

    Here are my thoughts...

The Eagles obviously had the talent, depth and quality to win the NFC. Missed opportunities here and there, deprived them of doing so.

However, there are several positives out of this season, which I believe is as important as the 2001 season.

In that season, the Eagles were not favorites to do anything. They were a team featuring an up and coming QB, and with a mix of veterans in Taylor ,Vincent, Hugh, etc. who almost made it to the SB. The youngsters however, in that team, rose to the occasion. You had an up and coming OL lead with Tra and Big Jon, you had Donovan, you had Corey Simon and Trotter, you had Duce, and the team obviously was set up to make noise in the years to follow. They did so by reaching the NFCCG three straight years, and eventually make it to the big game.

This year's team reminds me of that team.

Young talent is all over the place; Westbrook, Andrews, Herremans, Lito, Sheldon, Gaither, Stallworth, Reggie, LJ, Avant/Baskett, etc. You can also add Patterson, Bunkley, Cole in that group.

The veterans are here. Kearse, Howard, Dawk, Trotter, Runyan, Thomas. You have Akers too.

Donovan, as much as people find all sorts of controversies with, is an elite QB.

We have the depth back there (Garcia, Feeley, the OL youngsters).

The defense, as bad as it looked at times during the year, needs only one or two IMPACT players (LB, fat DT), and health. Maybe if Lito plays, JJ stacks the box and allows the CBs one on one with the Saints WRs.

The offense needs a bruiser. Bucky hasn't been exactly that this year, but it's not known whether it was because he couldn't or because Reid didn't integrate him enough.

Lastly, the Special Teams need to become special again. Blocking has been okay, but we need a return man. Hopefully Bloom will be that.

In other words, I agree with the rest that our offseason list shouldn't be too long. LB, run stuffer DT, and our own FAs like Stallworth, Garcia and Mikell.

Draft your bruiser RB, draft a SS, and draft secondary and maybe LBs.

If we do that, I can literally see us for another 4 NFCCGs in a row.

    Great thread fanofthegame...

It symbolizes one of the greatest things the Eagles have achieved IMO during this run...

They have almost completely turned over the roster from one core group with supporting elements to another WHILE still continuing to win at a high level...

The exception was 2005 due mostly IMO to the injuries, TO blowup and SB hangover...they started 4-2 and IMO would have had a successful season if those things did not happen to the degree they did...

      We'll be fine there.

      And I mean that.

An additional comment that I intended to put in the original post; the Eagles also recovered their running game. Teams will now have to gameplan for it next year.

I highly doubt that Reid is going to stay away from it.
