  • Radiohead - Tampa, Florida - May 6, 2008

Last night, I had the great fortune to see Radiohead live. I don't know if it was the best concert I have ever
witnessed (How can you rate experiences?), but it was certainly among the three best concerts I have attended. The
staging, the sound quality (Hearing music performed live is perhaps always better than the best reproduced sound
quality.), the antics of Thom Yorke, and the performance of (IMO) some of the best music of our times made it an
experience I will certainly never forget.

Before last night, I had never even considered Thom Yorke to be a great performer. He always seemed to be moody and
withdrawn. But, he proved last night that he is definitely a great performer and communicator. He was the music.
He mugged for the camera and danced like a spastic monkey, and his antics were perfectly in form with the music
which was performed even better than it sounds on the recordings.

Perhaps what was most striking about Thom Yorke was the quality of his voice. I told my son after the concert that
I don't think Thom hit a wrong note the entire evening, and he displayed a remarkable wide range. Even more
remarkable was the emotion communicated in his singing. You left believing that Yorke believed every word that he
sang. Each song seemed to have deep emotional significance. So, even though the concert was attended by thousands,
it still had a personal quality - It was like one person was communicating his private, emotional experiences to a vast
public audience. I feel extremely lucky to have been a part of that audience!

Perhaps I overemphasized Thom Yorke's performance to the exclusion of other members of the band. Everyone knows
that Jonny Greenwood contributes a lot to the music, and he was fantastic in his guitar, synthesizer, and effects
work. But, the other members of the band were also great in their supporting roles - the band is very tight.

I'm not good at remembering song titles or capturing set lists. But I do know that they played almost every song
from In Rainbows (Which I now believe is among the best albums ever recorded). They also played two songs from each
of the following albums: KidA, OK Computer, The Bends, and Amnesia. Below is a short listing of the set. There
    were two encores.

I paid $375 for two tickets to the concert (I bought the tix on EBay). We (My son and I) sat in the 17th row of the
center orchestra section. It was the most I ever paid for a concert, and it was definitely worth every cent that I
    paid.

If you get a chance to see them this summer, you should definitely take advantage of that opportunity - particularly
if you are a Radiohead fan (as I know many of you already are)!

Here's the set list (Please forgive me for omissions and other mistakes):

    Bodysnatchers
    Reckoner
    15 Steps
    Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
    Idioteque
    Airbag
    The National Anthem
    Optimistic
    House of Cards
    The Bends

stock - i like small intimate venues for concerts but I'll go see Radiohead anywhere.

If they come to your town for two nights, go see both nights. They played the greek a couple years ago and I only got tickets for night 1 and i totally regretted it. They vary the setlist and each performance is so amazing that it's completely worth it.

What I love about Radiohead is how they structure their live shows so you get a bit of everything. They rarely ever play stuff from Pablo Honey but once in a while, they'll throw the fans a bone and play Lurgee or something.

I can't wait for the August show in Camden. I'm waiting for my seat locations from WASTE.

stock - I got goosebumps reading your post because I feel the same connection to the band. I was watching some of the youtubes of their West Palm show and can't wait to see them again.

I gather this was your first time seeing them? I've only had the pleasure once before at the Tower Theater two years ago. Needless to say - it's the best concert I've been to. What Yorke does nowadays is embrace and "ham-up" his awkwardness where before he just remained aloof.

His voice has never been better and I agree - the live performance is where it hits you like a ton of bricks. I love Jonny Greenwood's playing and Ed O'Brien's backing vocals are beautiful and haunting at the same time. The person that is most under-rated in that band is drummer Phil Selway. He's magic back there and gets little fanfare. So glad you enjoyed and I can't wait for their return here to Philly in August.

Here's the setlist I've seen posted for last night:

      setlist
      01 all I need
      02 there there
      03 lucky
      04 bangers and mash
thom ‘now you’ll get some really good drumming’
      05 15 step
‘anyone in a rush? that’s cool cause he isn’t’ pointing at jonny
      06 nude
      07 pyramid song
      08 optimistic
      09 arpeggi
      10 the national anthem
      11 idioteque
      12 you and whose army
      13 reckoner
14 everything in its right place
      15 airbag
      16 bodysnatchers
      17 videotape

      encore

      18 the gloaming
      19 the tourist
      20 just
21 faust arp (thom and jonny, both on electric guitars)

      encore 2
      23 the bends

wow! that is an incredible set list.

        The gloaming? Exit music?

Stock, if you don't have it already, get "I Might Be Wrong" the live album they put out.

If they play True Love Waits in Camden, I might start crying like a little bitch.

idioteque is one of my favorite radiohead songs. it's also one of my go to songs when i gotta squeeze out that extra half mile on a run.

these videos are always so shitty in quality but totally make you want to be there.

august 12th is gonna be fun.

              Steve & Vin
Thanks a lot for your insights.

Yes, last night was my first Radiohead show. Needless to say, it won't be my last. I will try to see them as often as work and other (financial, romantic) arrangements allow.

That set list seems pretty accurate (Much better than I remember). What I remember most is that they closed with 'House of Cards', and it was truly sublime. Instead of bashing us over the head, they left us with a haunting, beautiful song that they played to perfection. Both my son and I were on cloud nine.

Those were also some of Thom's comments during the show (Now, you'll hear some really good drumming...He' isn't (in a hurry), pointing to Jonny. Just shows you how he tried to make the show personal!

I thought it was interesting that I didn't see a single tattoo on any of the band members. Here it is, the MOST innovative, progressive rock group of our time & none of the members felt the need to show their individuality through a tattoo. Interesting and instructive!!!

I'd be disappointed if they looked like the tools from Good Charlotte or Linkin Park or whatever. The music speaks for itself -- you don't need an image if you've got great music.

Radiohead is the best band of our generation. It's not even close.

Agreed - stock didn't see it and they pull it out just about every other show but IMO - their best tune is "How to Disappear Completely" and they didn't play it when I saw them. They better play it in August dagnabbit.

I have just been listening to In Rainbows over and over.

I even went and bought the CD (for the extra sound quality)despite the fact that I already had online version.

                    R E C K O N E R is amazing. Can't get it out of my head.

Phil Selway's "outro" drums are it are hypnotic.
