  • NFL Eagles Preview

After waiting to see this NFL preview I was very disappointed. All they did was (in two sections) review a couple of key plays from last season. As for this year (a short third section) they really only addressed their view of Donnie (he will come back based on the evidence from late last year) and Samuel (they had strong doubts that he could produce that well in the Eagles system). They really didn't take a position and seemed woefully uninformed.

That's actually pretty standard for the NFL network. I don't think they are allowed to be real opinionated about the success of teams. They have to be unbiased to a fault and let ESPN and FOX and other networks do their dirty work.

Let's just keep flying under the radar. We are really going to need a bigger bandwagon by midseason.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

If we stay healthy MM, you are definitely on the mark. I have some doubts but mostly I am afraid to accept the fact that I see at least as much reason for hope now as I did back in 04.

I think the media feel that this team has something to prove before it will embrace it again. It seems like last year, we found ways to lose games that we should have won. Andy will have to prove that this year is different. If we start off well in September, the media will jump on-board by October.

Seriously Dutch??? Man, I must be missing it.

I mean, for the 2004 season we had just signed TO and Kearse, Dmac hadn't had the long list of injures and was younger, as was Westy, Dawk, Runyan, Thomas...... I was geeked to the highest for that season. Not to mention that our division rivals were still mostly crap.

Now, I'm excited for this season, and I see possibilites and potential, but I am no where NEAR as optimistic as 2004.

And before anyone starts talking about bandwagons, yada, yada, yadda......... I am as commited to this team, boom or bust, as anyone here. Let them start off the season 5-1....or better...then I will start talking about besting 2004.

I have faith that the defense is going to dominant and the offense/special teams will be at least good with a lot of upside.

I pretty much agree with that, but that's where it ends. In fact, you might be a bit strong on the "dominant defense". Corner obviously looks very good right now. I think safety is goin to be fine. There will be a learning curve at LB. Could be very good, could be a lot of mistakes there. I think Trent Cole may come back to earth a bit, now that he has been recognized. Anyone REALLY have a good feel for Clemons? Who's the other great pass rusher here? As I say, I think they could be very good, but not likley a great, dominant group. Not yet.

Offense is all about McNabb. how does your confidence in McNabb stack up this season against the confidence you had in him in 2004?

ST's CAN'T be worse. They will be better.

The winner of our division is probably going to the SB, so let's start with the climb to the top of the division....from the BOTTOM. That won't be a cakewalk. 2004 was a cakewalk.

                  Re: NFL Eagles Preview

Gaither already has a 1 year and a half starting expierence. GoCong a full year (plus a year to study the play book on the IR). So I expect those two LBs to be pretty darn good. Bradley has a couple of starts under his belt, and looks like he can play the position.

Even with the film on Trent Cole, it will be hard to put more then two men on him because Bunk and Patterson will be collapsing the pocket. I see Juqua Parker and Clemons getting about 16 sacks combined. And a guy that is really flying beneath the radar that I think will be the starter opposite Cole, Victor Abimiri. I don't expect him to put up huge sack numbers this year maybe like 5-7, but I think he will be very good against the run.

                    Re: NFL Eagles Preview

                    This defense will be dominant.

Line- The line rotation will be better this year simply by the guys we have knowing the defense better. Plus, Patterson and Bunkley could be the best DT duo in the league. And, Cole, Clemons, JT, Abiamiri, and a rejuvenated Howard will be pass-rushing menaces.
LBs- Bradley, Gaither, and Gocong are poised to be one of the best groups in the league. Additionally, all three are big enough not come out on running downs, and fast enough to not come out on passing downs. Makes them versatile and dangerous.
Secondary- Hard pressed to find better overall talent than what we have.

My only concern is that they take until week 4 to be perfect.

                    Looks good to me though.

                      Re: NFL Eagles Preview

I'm really optimistic about the defense. Maybe overly so, but I think JJ really has a group of players that fit the mold of what he looks for. You look at every position on the defense, and JJ's got the type of player he wants there. I don't think he's had a better group of players to work with. In the past, he's always had to scheme around something. Holes at LBer or in the defensive backfield. Lack of a pass rush. But, this group is really talented. Maybe it's just me, but I think they are going to be really, really good this year.

They also better improve on specials. They've addressed it well in the offseason, they just need to put it on the field.

The O-line needs to get it's $hit together, and I think they will. They had an off year last year, and I think they knew that, especially Jackson, who I expect to rebound.

Considering that we went 8-8 last year, and blew a couple games we clearly should have won, and given McNabb's recovery, I just don't understand how people can pick us to finish 8-8 again. Or, finish in last in the division. But, I think we'll see a lot of that between now and Sept. That's fine, but I think we are going to be a lot better than that.

I came up with 12 wins when the schedule came out. For now I'm sticking to that.

                          Re: NFL Eagles Preview

WHen I look at last year's collapse that still left them only a game out of the playoffs I get encouraged. When I think that this year we add a healthy McNabb, Dawkins, LJ, Herremans, Jackson and maybe healthier Andrews, Thomas and Runyan, I can't help forseeing considerable improvement over last years 8-8. When I look and see that this is quite possibly the best D in Philly since Reggie and Co. I get very excited. I think of the quality starting and also at backup on the Dline, at CB, S and maybe also at LB and I feel a bit of a cushion against the "I" word. Finally I think of the disaster we had last year on STs and think of the returners and blockers they have assiduously accumulated and I get real scared about how good this team could be. No they didn't add a TO and a Kearse but we did add a Samuels and a couple of good looking rookies. Andy has assembled a team, they are big, fast and a good balance of youngsters and older vets. Hang on to your hats folks. This could get real, real iteresting.

                              In reference to ST's:

Boiman, Clemens, and Jackson were added to this roster to bolster the STs. Boiman and Jackson specifically for that purpose.

Considering that we ranked dead fu@#$@# last in that category, anything will be an improvement, but to add talent specifically will put this group into the top 10.
