  • The McNabb benching...right or wrong??

I just want to get the board's perspective on this. As these playoffs progress, it continues and WILL continue to be a topic of much media and public speculation. Did Andy do the right thing there? THis is my perspactive:

Yes. Had to do it. Right call. Good result.
Whether you are a McNabb backer or not, and I am off and on with that I must admit, the one thing you could surely say about Donovan was he did a great job of taking care of the ball and not turning it over. Donovan seems to feel wronged by the benching, but I say that no matter how well he was playing otherwise (and he wasn't playing well) when you are turning the ball over once a quarter, you CAN'T WIN. Andy did what he had to do.

Donovan never mentions it, but he has to realize the real reason for the benching. It was the turnovers. The benching sent a message not only to him, but to the rest of the team as he is the most visible player, that you can't make mistakes, and everyone has to do their part. I think the team responded, and it sent us on this little run we are on. It refocused everyone, not just him, and raised everyone's accountability.

I support the move. What say you all?

I'm on board with you on this Fresh. Andy needed to send a message to the team and to Donovan and he did that. McNabb continues to make it known that he feels wronged by being benched but I have news for him - playing in the games is not a God given right. It's something you have to earn. To continue to make statements like he did this week about how the Giants Defense hasn't been benched (he said it as a joke but it was really another jab at Reid). When he continues to complain about it it really turns me off to him. He is one of the most inconsistent QBs I've ever seen play the game. To get bitchy because the coach takes steps to shake things up and get you back on track is really just wrong. That's his job. If you do yours he doesn't need to do his. To answer the question, yes Reid did the right thing.

Of course, it was the right move. DMac was stinking up the joint, and to have the QB turning the ball over as often as he was in those two games, especially when we're running a pass-first (if not pass-heavy) offense can't be tolerated.

Plus, the Eagles as a team were a rudderless ship heading for 7-8-1. Reid had to light a fire under the team and show them that anyone could be replaced, even someone who'd been the starter (barring injury) since 1999.

It's a no-brainer, it was the right call. Chances are that McNabb understands that too, even if he doesn't like it.

Judging by the result, it was clearly the right move. If it didn't impact McNabb's play, as he says, I think it still motivated the players around him to play better.

But I think it did have an impact on McNabb. He's got a big chip on his shoulder and he is using it as motivation, IMO.

McNabb being benched lit a giant spark under him and has turned this team around.

He can say it didn't and all this nonsense but it was a brilliant move by Reid. And when I say that I mean it was brilliant that he went back to McNabb for Arizona after the benching.

The in game decision was a so so call. The benching as a way to get McNabb out of his funk and get the team awake - was brilliant.

"Judging by the result, it was clearly the right move."

20/20 hindsight sez it helped, period. The result speaks for itself.

I didnt agree with the benching especially at the time it was done. I do agree with the result though and I am glad it happened. McNabb has played a whole lot better. I do wished Andy would have told him personally though! Perhaps (not likely but perhaps) we wouldnt be listening to McNabb talk about it at every turn.

                Right move! Right time!

D Mac does many things well! But if we are to believe what he says, objective analysis of his own game play is not always one of those things!

Oh! And one other thing Donny...please lose that dumbass side line dance! It's really embarrassing!

It happened close to the benching of Gaither, both units took a look at themselves and decided to pull their heads out of their asses. Great results,in an era when everyone is being paid well, playing time/lack of playing time is about the only motivational tool a coach has. Awesome results and hats off to BIG Red having the balls to do it.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

Even if it hadn't worked out, it would have been the right thing to do. Everyone's accountable, no one gets a free ride. I think it kick started the whole team.

Oh without a doubt it was the right move. Don was bringing the team down as a whole. 1for7 or 2for9 starts are totally unforgiveable when you're talking about a QB that has been with this same offense all these years.

Now Dmac will NEVER admit it, thats just his way, but #5 needed to stand over there healthy for once and look at what he was doing to the franchise.

Has Dmac EVER talked on any of his poor performances?

I know the D will show up tommorrow. They will be even better with Dmac and Andy just put points on the board. I dont care if its Acers all day. DONT WASTE A DRIVE.

                          Donovan's benching was well earned
and it worked. No player is above sitting
down if they're not playing well on a
                          consistent basis.

I don't really agree with this. When Dawk played like shit he was always on the field. Ditto Westy. I do agree it worked but not everybody on this team is going to get benched. Which means not everyone is accountable.

Hindsight says it worked. The team has played much better outside of the skins game. BUT the Baltimore game was 10-7 at the half (going off memory here) McNabb was playing like crap. Still, he was the best QB to win that game. At 3 points, it was winnable. Kolb gave the team about zero chance esp. against that D. So without all the breaks falling our way to get into the playoffs, would it have been the right move?
