  • OT: The Dutchman Makes the Papers

Somehow the local paper the Ocala Star Banner heard of me and asked to do a story. They interviewed me this week and then followed me to the gym where they took a ton of photos. This article is in today's paper but the online version only uses one photo. They are sending me a CD with copies of all the shots.

I plan on stepping up my workouts (to add to my 5'11", 218 lbs)and then asking Andy if I can take a run at the SS position.

Good job. I too love staying in shape but I am only in my 40's and have chosen a different type of exercise. Nonetheless, keep it up.

Instead of SS, maybe you can be the "big back" many think the team needs.

      Great stuff, FD!

But no mention of the Eagles in the article does add a little tarnish! LOL!!!!

        FD,

You are to be congratulated! Im almost 65, but my exercize routine gets no more strenuous than calisthenics, bike riding and elbow bending....mostly elbow bending during the winter, when I live in Indian Rocks Beach, FL.

I will have to conceal your post from my wife, who is an exercize maven, and who would be on my case even more than she is now if she could hold you up as an example of what I COULD be doing.

May I ask if you live in Florida year round, and if so, how do you cope with the heat.

Thanks TP. I hope your wife finds the article and gets on your case LOL. I am gung ho about trying to prove to people that age is not a deterrent. I am convinced that the investment in time, good nutrition and intelligent supplementation has life saving/extending benefits. Not to mention the improved quality of that life. As for the heat, no big deal IMHO. I lived through worse in my years in S.Jersey where the temps and humidity were both higher in July & August. If I'm going to play 18 I just schedule it for the AM or the late afternoon/evening.

            FD,
            Thanks for the feedback.

Your comparison with summers in South Jersey is on point for me as I grew up in Pennsauken, NJ (next to Cherry Hill) and spent my first 30+ years in the Delaware Valley. One of the main reasons we moved to upstate NY was to escape the summers. The other was for the winters, as I was an avid skier until the knees gave out. Eventually, I suppose we'll move to Florida full time, but I'll really miss the change of seasons when we do.

TP: We'll have to hook up the next time you're down here. I am a Bishop Eustace grad, class of 59 so I am well acquainted with the SJ summers. With the unlimited number of things to do here in The Villages, aka "Disneyworld for Adults" I really don't miss the winters despite being a onetime skiing enthusiast myself.

Pagstx: There are many paths to success. I just want to point out to folks the idiocy of the standard refrain "You're too old to do that". Staying alive and healthy is a great reward for the committment. I've spent a lifetime with running, biking, martial arts and lifting all with great results. In the meantime all, I mean all, my friends, relatives and neighbors are afflicted with some really serious problems. Hell I'm in training for my 50 HS reunion in three years LOL.

MDFan: I guess I could have told them I used to train in the very exclusive 700 level club by lifting Foreskin fans up and dumping them over the wall in my youth.

See, now that would have made for a much smoother read for me! Thanks Bud! HAHA!

                  Dutch,
Great article and of course even greater job by you in setting a great example. I use to run cross country.........right passed your HS. I ran for Camden Catholic in the late 70's and we practced at Cooper River. We ran by your school on the way there, around the course and on the way home. We even ran by Tiny Tim's home. We use to consider BE our rivals.

                  Tin,
I lived behind Rice and Holman. Went to school at St. Pete's. Ate cheese Steaks at the House of Pizza. Swam at Iron Rock. Played Street Lacrosse off of Union Ave. Played little league ball at PYAA field and at Merchantville. I lived on Oakview Ave. which was a short cut for Pennsauken residents to get to the mall from, Maple Ave to Church Road. You might have chased me out of the street during one of my many street ball games (at the curve). LOL

Dutchie I read that article and you should be ashamed of yourself. You're ruining it for the rest of us! How the hell are we supposed to justify laying on the couch eating potato chips and drinking beer while watching the Phillies at the ripe old age of 42 when you're out there making us look bad? I'd kick your ass if I could muster the energy to get off the couch! But then when I think about all the work it would take to clean the blood from the carpet after you beat me to a pulp, I just want to roll over and take a nap!!

Seriously, good job! I also ran cross country through out high school and into my freshman year in North Carolina. Then the knees got so bad the Doctor recommended surgery but I avoided it by giving up running. That led to increased raquetball, softball and football games with my friends which eventually brought back the knee pain. Football & raquetball went away about 8 years ago and two torn achilles tendons finished me off three years ago for all sports.

I'd like to start getting into shape again. Any suggestions for getting off the couch and getting motivated? How do you stay so motivated? ...and more importantly, how do you find the time to work out four times a week?

No joken, Juken, here's what you do. You look at your wife, your kids, your pot-bellied buddies, your aging parents and grandparents and then you look in the mirror, and say when do I do what I know needs to be done. You're a good 2/3 to retirement and you haven't made any investment for it. No, I don't mean financial, that's actually less important..ie you can't spend it if....! Then you find a decent gym that's open early, late and often. You get up at 5, knock down some oatmeal or yolkless egg concoctions and by 6 your working out. You're done by 7 and in work with the adrenaline boiling as you get a great start to the day. While in the gym you plan on the first 3 to 6 months being of the all-around (ie chest, back, shoulders, arms, abs and legs) variety with low weight, high reps on injury safe machines. You can alter weight, reps and rest intervals as you progress but start slowly so you don't get too sore and dissappear. Free weights come later after the old bod has been restructured and toned up a bit. This is key..."Leave your Ego at the Door!!!!" Work up to say 4 days of lifting and add afterwards or on off days some bicycle, treadmill or stepper aerobics. Even there use the HIT principle for high intensity training. Just keep the level down ie 2 mins warm-up 2 mins at a faster speed, 2 mins recovery etc etc. In no time you will be improving and upgrading your efforts. Stay off the scale, but stay on a healthy diet say a variation of the South Beach for example ie no white breads or pasta, good veggies blah blah. After a month then get on the scale, look in the mirror, check you pulse and BP.....and Smile with satisfaction for a job well started. After that you are off to the races and motivation comes every time you buckle that belt or play with the kids or hold your wife. Viel Glueck!

Amen to you and your mindset.

I married a woman who is just dedicated/obsessed with working out (Bonus for me!) but the reality is that you know in order to give her and your children all you can - you need to pick up your game too!

I've been a big guy since my early 20's and took up running. I just finished the Broad Street 10 Miler and will run the Philadelphia Half Marathon in September.

I don't always love it - but damn if having goals doesn't motivate us men like crazy.

Every man I know who does well keeps goals up and looks to "conquer" them.

Great job Dutch. It gets harder as you get older so I really admire your work...

Congrats to you BP. You've got it right.

I am goal oriented and driven so now I tease myself with the idea that by next year I could contend for the powerlifting records (Bench Press and Deadlift) as the strongest guy, by age and weight, to have ever lived in Florida. I know the records and keep them in mind as I train. Slowly I am creeping up on them. Whether or not I get them, I am already competitive and proud that I hung in there. In fact matching my own records as I age is an improvement and a victory of its own.
