Which Undrafted Rookies Should The Philadelphia Eagles Target?

Although the free agency market may not be opening for a while, it's fun, as always, to speculate on the possible targets of the Eagles front office. With the 2011 NFL Draft complete, there are still dozens of undrafted rookies who are forbidden to be contacted by any NFL team.
Once the doors to the free agent market are finally thrown open, there are a few college prospects who the Eagles should definitely give a second look. Who knows? They might just strike gold and nab a player like Quintin Mikell or Jamaal Jackson, both of whom went undrafted in 2003.

After the jump, check out the details on nine rookies who could be wearing midnight green someday.

      Ugo Chinasa: DE, Oklahoma State
      6'5" 255 lbs
Surprisingly, Andy Reid did not draft a single defensive lineman in this year's draft. Although the team added to their defensive end rotation with CFL star Philip Hunt, they'll need more young talent for Jim Washburn to mold. Chinasa is a quick, pass-rushing specialist that could fit in well as a situational player. He'll need to add some muscle to his large frame if he expects to go up against NFL-caliber offensive tackles, though.

      Noel Devine: RB, West Virginia
      5'7" 180 lbs
Although his miniscule size caused many teams to shy away from him during the draft, Devine's top-end speed and pass catching ability could make him an attractive change-of-pace back option for the Eagles. Andy Reid has always valued halfbacks that can catch the ball out of the backfield, and Devine has the hands and elusiveness to turn a short pass into a score, as long as he doesn't get hit. Devine's kick return ability should also catch the eye of the Eagles' coaching staff.

      Pat Devlin: QB, Delaware
      6'4" 220 lbs
After checking out his Pro Day at Delaware, the Eagles decided to pass on Devlin the first time around. However, he still might be of interest to the team as a tertiary or practice squad quarterback. Although Devlin doesn't have the cannon arm to fire an accurate deep ball, he does very well delivering short, catchable passes that allow the receiver to gain extra yardage. He also displays a good pocket presence, but also has the kind of mobility that the Eagles love in their signal-callers.

      Charlie Gantt: TE, Michigan State
      6'5" 260 lbs
Since the Eagles only have two reserve tight ends, Clay Harbor and John Nalbone, they'll almost certainly look to pick up a fourth through the undrafted rookie class. Gantt is the best blocking tight ends still available, with excellent route-running ability and the size to be a goal-line receiving threat.

      Chas Henry: P, Florida
      6'3" 215 lbs
It seems that every year, the Eagles bring in an undrafted rookie punter that they pretend to throw up against Sav Rocca, when really, they just need a guy to fill in for Rocca while he ices his leg. This year, however, the team showed a willingness to overhaul their special teams program with the drafting of kicker Alex Henery. Florida's Chas Henry may be the next specialist to come to Philadelphia. Rated by many as the best punter in this year's draft class, He has the experience, accuracy and durability to legitimately challenge for a starting role. Henry is even an accomplished holder, which will help his chances.

      DeAndre McDaniel: S, Clemson
      6'0" 215 lbs
Although the Eagles have their safety situation pretty much figured out with Nate Allen, Kurt Coleman, Jaiquawn Jarrett and Colt Anderson, it certainly couldn't hurt to take a look at Clemson strong safety DeAndre McDaniel. Although initially projected to go in the second or third round, McDaniel's suspect speed caused a draft-day tumble of epic proportions. However, his penchant for devastating tackles has caused some to call him a poor man's Brian Dawkins.

      Kris O'Dowd: C, USC

      6'4" 304 lbs
Once regarded as a potential first-round draft pick, O'Dowd's stock fell heavily due to continued injury concerns. However, his incredible football knowledge, work ethic and leadership skills make him a desirable player to have on any team, even if he's only a member of the practice squad. He is the kind of low-risk high reward signing that Andy Reid should pounce on, especially with the team's recent focus on the interior of the offensive line.

      Cedric Thornton: DT, Southern Arkansas
      6'3" 309 lbs
Thornton's small school status was likely one of the factors that forced him out of the later rounds, but he nevertheless has significant value as a pass rusher in Jim Washburn's defensive line rotation. He has the quickness and bull rush capabilities to burst through the line and take down the quarterback, and would be able to find the field in select situations as a third or fourth defensive tackle.

      Terrence Toliver: WR, LSU
      6'4" 212 lbs
The Eagles strayed away from upgrading their wide receiver depth in this draft, and will likely look to add competition for Chad Hall and Sinorice Moss through the undrafted rookie class. Terrence Toliver has a great combination of size, speed and strength that could make him a deep threat if he cleans up his catching process. Tolliver is a bit of a project at this point, but has the frame and raw skill to develop into a significant receiving weapon.

Wow! I'm surprised that Noel Devine wasn't drafted. He is a very quick back. He could not be stopped when I saw WV play. Definitely worth a flyer.

As the NFL Lockout Continues, the Undrafted Rookie Market Begins to Thin

It's certainly not easy being an undrafted rookie in a lockout year. With NFL teams forbidden to even talk to their current players, much less prospective players, college prospects who weren't selected during the 2011 NFL Draft are left in limbo.

The situation appears to be wearing on players like offensive linemen J'Michael Deane of Michigan State and John Bender of Nevada, both of whom have recently signed contracts with the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL.

The UFL has had its fair share of new recruits as well, sending Texas A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson to the Hartford Colonials with the first overall pick in the UFL Draft. In an interview with Fox Houston last week, Johnson pointed to the NFL Lockout as the primary factor in his decision to go with the UFL:
"When you don’t get drafted teams now start recruiting you to come in as a free agent. And you can sit down and look at depth charts or offenses or a situation that fits you personally. And with the lockout that opportunity didn’t present itself."
However, many holdouts still exist, the most noteworthy being Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich. Despite being drafted by the Omaha Nighthawks, he has told SI's Peter King that he plans to wait for his chance in the NFL.

Still the Eagles, who have been successful with undrafted rookies in the past, had better hope that the lockout is lifted soon, or they'll be left with pretty slim pickings. The longer the NFL's legal battle drags on, the more organizations like the UFL and CFL are going to pressure the undrafted rookies to take their chances in alternate leagues.

Of course, Kentucky running back Derrick Locke will always be there for the taking since his Twitter response to being drafted by the UFL was: "I'm not going to that shit."

            Clemson? How ironic.
