  • Another BS roughing the passer on Mathews today

This was last week's. He got called again today on one that was shaky at best. If you are coming straight after the qb I don't know what else you can do to tackle him?

I said about 3 years ago that in my lifetime the QB will have flags on a belt around his waist. Getting close
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

I think that all roughing the passer plays should go to NY and be reviewed. The NFL should hire one official roughing guy and that's all that he does and the decision could be made in 15 seconds and move on.

I'm normally a guy that fully supports reasonable efforts to reduce injuries in the NFL. These guys have become so big, muscular and fast that season ending injuries are an almost daily occurrence.

But the over protection of the QBs has gotten out of hand. There were several roughing calls today, including the one on Mathews, that would be comical if they weren't so unfair to the penalized player/team. Like most things the NFL pursues in earnest, the real motivation in this over empasis comes from cynical efforts to protect the revenue streams in a QB driven league.

Biggest problem in all officiating IMM is that they give the ref no room for discretion. Like someone once said he doesn't know the definition of porn but he knows it when he sees it. They don't allow the ref to make the distinction of falling onto a QB and driving him into the ground. They don't allow the ref to make a distinction when the defender is moving in a line but the receiver comes down differently or gets pushed off his line and the defender hits him around the head versus the guy who is a head hunter or targets a receiver.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
          Hope is not a strategy
          RIP

I understand that ND but the referee who stands behind the QB has basically one responsibility and that is to watch the QB. That's the only place his eyes are focused on and he's not like other officials who have to keep up with wrs running deep patterns and judging calls while sprinting. If all of the guys are going to call it differently then it should go to NY in my opinion.

              Agreed.

The rule was put in place because players like Sapp, Ted Washington and even Fletcher Cox would belly flop on QBs with their oversized weight......

And it’s been turned into a flag for tackling the marketing tools of the NFL too hard.

Let's just put a flag on the QB and if its pulled they are sacked. The officials obviously have no real way of calling this, the league will back the officials every time. I saw nothing wrong with Mathews hit, you can even see he tried to tackle to the side of him.
