Source: Mathis Absent For Start Of OTAs

By Tim McManus | May 26, 2015 at 1:33 pm

Evan Mathis did not show up for the start of the Eagles’ Organized Team Activities Tuesday, a league source confirmed. CSN’s Derrick Gunn was first with the news.

The Pro Bowl guard has not participated in the team’s offseason training program to date. Spring workouts are voluntary. The first time players are obligated to be in attendance is for the team’s mandatory minicamp from June 16-18. Should he skip those, he’ll face a hefty penalty.

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, an unexcused absence from mandatory offseason minicamp carries a maximum fine of $10,000 for the first missed day. That amount shall increase by $10,000 per day for each day the player remains absent, meaning a player can be fined a total of $60,000 if he misses all three days.

Money is at the root of Mathis' unrest. The 33-year-old is entering the fourth year of a five-year, $25.5 million contract. He is scheduled to make a base salary of $5.5 million this season and $6 million next season. Mathis is in search of a new deal that is more comparable to some of the other top guards in the league.

The Eagles are not inclined to rip up the current contract, and have granted agent Drew Rosenhaus permission to seek a trade for the second offseason in a row.

"Evan has been available to trade for two years now and we have never had an offer for him," said Chip Kelly earlier in the month. "That's through his agent and him. They've asked us if he can renegotiate a contract and see what he can get and we've obliged them with that, but we've never had an offer on him."

Given that he's been working the trade angle for two offseasons now, Mathis is clearly frustrated with the current set-up. And it would be no surprise if Kelly is growing tired of the act.

Problem is, there is not a great solution here at present. With no trade offers coming in, the only way Mathis gets his wish is if the Kelly agrees to cut him. But the Eagles already parted with one starting guard this offseason. Can they really afford to get rid of another? Probably not, especially considering that they did not use a draft pick on an O-lineman for the second straight year.

We'll have a better feel for how committed Mathis is to the contract cause come mid-June

Sorry guys, no news here. I got mixed up on dates and thought today started mandatory participation. The heat's off for now anyway.

In any case, he's still acting like an asshole. But what else would we expect with Rosenswine advising him.

The poor little thing is only going to make $5.5 mil this year. How will his children possibly survive.

I think June 16-18 is the only mandatory practices until training camp. That will be a little more telling, though maybe Rosenhaus will have him skip those and eat the fine. We will see.

Why not? Rosenhaus has nothing to lose.

What irks me is that Mathis isn't on a rookie or a bargain basement contract. He is being paid well especially for his age. Yes Mathis ultimately is responsible for what he does but that lower then shit scum agent of his is the driver of this mess. He needs a commission damnit.

Eagles To Check Out G Chris Chester

By Tim McManus | May 29, 2015 at 4:30 pm

The Eagles are bringing in veteran offensive lineman Chris Chester for a visit, according to Adam Caplan.

Chester (6-3, 303), a second-round pick by the Ravens back in 2006, has started 111 games over his career, including 46 straight at right guard for Washington the last four years. He was released by Washington on Wednesday in a move that will reportedly save the team $4 million in cap money.

According to NFL.com, Chester "was an ill fit for Jay Gruden's power-blocking scheme and he struggled in 2014."
Perhaps he would be a better fit in Philly.
The Eagles could certainly use some reinforcements along the interior. They decided to part ways with Todd Herremans this offseason. And their other starter from 2014, Evan Mathis, is unhappy with his contract and has stayed away from voluntary workouts this spring.
Allen Barbre has been getting the first team reps at left guard in his absence, while Matt Tobin and Andrew Gardner are rotating at right guard. Though the coaching staff seems to see promise here, all come with question marks attached to them. There is not much proven depth behind them. The Eagles were unable to add any o-line help in the draft, instead picking up several undrafted free agents after the fact.

The need for additional help grows, of course, if the decision is made to move on from Mathis. At his press conference Thursday, Chip Kelly said that he has not spoken with Mathis since the offseason training program began.

Good athlete. Check out his spider chart. http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2...e-guard-center

                And this from T Lawler

                * Allen Barbre is playing LG with Evan Mathis skipping the voluntary OTAs. Matt Tobin is one of several guys playing RG. This is interesting to me.

Mathis is expected to be the LG this year. Barbre would then play RG. Why not let him spend as much time as possible there this summer so he can get as comfortable as possible? Every rep is a chance to work on footwork, technique and things like that.

Does this mean Tobin could win the RG job?

Or does this mean something could happen with Mathis and the starting OGs could be Barbre and Tobin? You don’t want to read too much into something like this, but it does seem interesting to me.

                  Forget about Chestet

Falcons strike deal with veteran guard Chris Chester
                  May
                  30

The Atlanta Falcons have signed veteran offensive guard Chris Chester to a one-year, $2.8 million contract, a league source told Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com.

Chester, 32, was released by the Washington Redskins earlier this week after 64 starts at right guard. He began his career as a second-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in 2006.

In Washington, Chester played under current Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who held the same title with the Redskins. Chester is familiar with Shanahan's outside-zone blocking scheme and is known for having good footwork for the running game.

The Falcons have a void at left guard after releasing veteran Justin Blalock, who was a better pass protector than run-blocker. Newcomer Mike Person, last with the St. Louis Rams, has been running with the first team at left guard. Chester appears destined to take over that role if the team elects to keep fellow veteran Jon Asamoah at right guard. Asamoah is not exactly the best fit for the zone-blocking scheme, but he's a solid pass protector for Matt Ryan.
