The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced some roster moves on Tuesday evening.
First, the team signed free agent cornerback Dexter McDougle. The Eagles originally traded Terrence Brooks to the Jets in exchange for McDougle prior to the final preseason game last summer. McDougle served as a backup slot corner and special teams contributor prior to being cut in order to make room for Dannell Ellerbe in November.
The Eagles are in need of depth at nickel cornerback with Sidney Jones suffering a hamstring injury that Doug Pederson described as “week-to-week.” McDougle’s familiarity with the Eagles’ defensive scheme could allow him to fill in there, which could then let Avonte Maddox stay back at safety. (Read more about McDougle here.)
In order to make room for McDougle, the Eagles waived/injured defensive tackle Destiny Vaeao. The 2016 undrafted free agent signing has largely been ineffective for Philly, but now the Eagles are even thinner on the interior defensive line. Fletcher Cox, Haloti Ngata, and Trevon Hester are the only three defensive tackles on the 53-man roster and Ngata has missed the last two games due to injury. Of course, Philadelphia can also use Michael Bennett and Brandon Graham to play inside.
In order to add more DT depth, the Eagles signed Winston Craig to the practice squad. Craig has bounced on and off the team’s roster since originally signing as an undrafted free agent in 2017. Linebacker Kyle Wilson was waived to make room for Craig. The Eagles didn’t need Wilson after adding linebacker B.J. Bello to the scout team earlier on Tuesday.
